WAKING UP TO THE SOUND OF WAVES THAT PLASHED AGAINST THE SAND, Emma woke up from her deep slumber. The sun was shining directly into the room, on the bed, where the two lovers were tangled up together.
Emma stirred, slowly drifting into consciousness, warmth wrapping around her as she felt the gentle weight of Charlie's arm across her waist. She blinked her eyes open and turned her head just enough to see him, still deeply asleep, his face peaceful, a slight hint of a smile on his lips.
The sight filled her with a surge of tenderness, one so strong it made her chest tighten. She lay there for a moment, simply soaking in the quiet intimacy of this early hour.
As if sensing her gaze, Charlie's eyes fluttered open, a sleepy, slightly dazed look on his face. He blinked, adjusting to the morning light before his eyes found hers, and his expression melted into a slow smile.
"good morning, baby" he murmured, his voice husky with sleep. Emma laughed softly, the word making her heart flutter. "good morning, my love." a soft, sweet tone in her voice.
Charlie shifted closer, pulling her into him as he let out a contented sigh. "i could get used to waking up like this," he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. He brushed a stray hair from her face, his fingertips lingering against her cheek. Emma felt herself smile. "just 'could,' huh?" she teased, tracing a lazy circle on his arm. "not 'absolutely have to'?"
"fine, absolutely have to," he conceded, grinning. "in fact, i think it's mandatory now." he leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. They lay there, wrapped in each other, the world outside their little beach house still soft and quiet, as if the morning had arrived just for them.
After a pause, Charlie spoke again, his voice thoughtful. "did you ever imagine we'd end up here? you and me, in this little house... on the other side of the world? i don't want to go home again"
Emma shook her head, her gaze drifting toward the light dancing on the wall. "not exactly here, but... i always knew i wanted something that felt like this. safe and warm. real." she looked back at him, her smile softening. "but i didn't expect you to be that for me. and now i can't imagine it any other way."
