That first night, Kevin slept soundly for the first time in what felt like months, completely exhausted from the labor and the overwhelming emotions of the day. Nico, on the other hand, found himself unable to rest. Helena's tiny cries would wake him every fifteen minutes, and each time, he would rush over to check on her, cradling her in his arms. His racing reflexes still kicking in, though for a different type of urgency now.
Even though he hadn't slept properly, Nico wasn't tired. He felt alive, electric with a new kind of energy that came from being a father. He stared down at Helena, marveling at how small and red she still looked, her little fingers curling around his as she squirmed in his arms. Every sound she made, every little movement, filled his heart to the brim.
How much love could one person feel? He thought he had understood love before—his love for Kevin was all-consuming, raw, and powerful. But this? This love for their baby girl was something else entirely. It was gentle, protective, fierce in a way that surprised him. Every time he looked at her, he felt like he could burst.
Helena eventually settled down, her tiny breaths evening out as she drifted off to sleep again. Nico laid her carefully back in the bassinet beside Kevin's bed, glancing over at his sleeping partner. Kevin's face was peaceful, his body finally at rest, and Nico smiled to himself. They had done this. They had created a little family.
But just as he closed his eyes, hoping for a few minutes of sleep, Helena stirred again, her small cry breaking the quiet. Nico chuckled softly, running a hand through his hair. This was his life now, and he wouldn't trade it for anything.
The next morning, as Kevin woke up and slowly adjusted to the idea of parenthood, Nico sat beside him, still in awe of everything. They shared a few quiet moments, just the three of them, before Nico's phone buzzed.
Messages flooded in from their friends and fellow drivers, asking if they could visit the hospital. Everyone wanted to see the new baby. Nico smiled at the thought of their friends doting over Helena, but he also didn't want to overwhelm Kevin.
"Maybe tomorrow," Nico replied to each message, adding, "I'll let Kevin decide."
Later, after Kevin had woken up properly and they talked it over, he agreed to let their friends come by. He felt rested enough, and honestly, a bit excited to share this moment with the people closest to them.
It didn't take long before the drivers and their friends started arriving, arms loaded with gifts—except this time, instead of toys and baby clothes, they brought good food. It was as if they all had an unspoken agreement that Kevin needed to eat well now. Some had homemade meals, while others brought in food from Kevin's favorite restaurants.
Max Verstappen was the last to arrive, strolling in with a grin on his face, carrying something shiny. He walked straight up to Kevin, who was seated in the bed with Helena nestled in his arms.
"Look, I won the race," Max said, holding out the race trophy he just bought out from Res Bull, in his hands. His smile softened as he looked at the tiny baby, but his usual smirk quickly returned. "But I think you deserve the biggest trophy of them all. This is the best I could get on such short notice."
Kevin laughed, though it came out a bit more like a chuckle, touched by the gesture. He carefully shifted Helena to one arm and accepted the trophy from Max with his free hand. "Thanks, Max," he said, his eyes a little misty. "But you're right—this little one is the real prize."
Max nodded, his usual cocky attitude giving way to something softer as he watched the baby in Kevin's arms. "She's so tiny," Max muttered, his voice quieter than usual, clearly amazed by the sight. "Congrats, Kev. She's perfect."
One by one, each driver melted the moment they saw Helena. Even the toughest among them—guys who wouldn't usually show their soft sides—stood there, grinning like idiots, eyes wide with wonder as they cooed over the tiny baby. They took turns gently touching her little hands or stroking her soft hair, careful not to disturb her.
The room was filled with laughter and warmth, everyone buzzing with excitement as they welcomed the newest member of the family. Nico stood back for a moment, watching the scene unfold, his heart swelling with pride. It was exactly what they needed—Kevin surrounded by friends, supported and loved, Helena being doted on by the people who cared about them both.
It was perfect.
The days in the hospital felt like a blur of emotions and firsts. Kevin and Nico spent most of their time together, learning how to care for Helena while still adjusting to being parents. The hospital staff was kind, giving them the space they needed while offering guidance whenever they asked. Kevin was healing well, but Nico insisted on staying close, helping him with everything, from holding Helena to feeding her, to simply making sure Kevin was comfortable.
Kevin had his moments of overwhelming emotions, sometimes feeling exhausted and unsure, but every time Nico looked at him with that adoring smile and cradled Helena like she was the most precious thing in the world, Kevin's worries melted away. They were a family now, and despite the sleepless nights and constant crying, it was the happiest they'd ever been.
On the fourth day, their doctor gave them the all-clear to take Kevin and Helena home. Nico couldn't have been more relieved. As much as they appreciated the comfort of the hospital, nothing beat the thought of settling into their own space, their little sanctuary.
Nico had arranged for their car to be loaded with all the essentials, and as he helped Kevin into the back seat with Helena nestled in her car seat, he felt his heart swell with pride. This was the moment they'd been waiting for.
Once they arrived home, Kevin leaned back in his seat, exhausted but happy, watching Nico as he brought in their bags and carefully lifted Helena from her seat. The house felt like a peaceful haven, quiet and cozy, ready for them to start their new life. Kevin could already see the baby clothes and toys they had unpacked weeks ago, waiting in the nursery Nico had worked so hard to set up.
Kevin smiled softly, letting out a sigh of relief. "Home," he whispered as Nico came over, handing him Helena. "Feels good, doesn't it?"
Nico nodded, sitting beside him and wrapping an arm around Kevin's shoulders. "Yeah, it does," he agreed, pressing a kiss to Kevin's temple. "It's perfect."
The next weekend, while the rest of the grid was gearing up for the next race, Nico was right where he wanted to be—at home with his family. He had informed his team that he would be sitting out this race, giving a junior driver the chance to try their hand in his seat. No regrets, no second thoughts. All that mattered to him now was being here with Kevin and Helena.
He spent his days wrapped up in the joy of fatherhood, never far from Kevin's side, doting on him and their baby girl. He was there for every little thing—changing diapers, calming Helena when she cried, making sure Kevin ate enough and rested. Nico was so completely absorbed in them that he barely thought about the race at all. This was his priority now.
As they sat on the couch together one quiet afternoon, Kevin holding Helena while she napped, Nico watched them with a soft smile. He wasn't missing out on anything important. What he had here, with Kevin and Helena, was worth more than any race win.
Nico leaned over, gently brushing a kiss against Kevin's cheek, and whispered, "I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
