His eyes...

Kashi’s breath caught in her chest, her heart beating wildly. She felt the like world around her still, as if the moment itself was suspended in time.  And in that brief exchange, Kashi felt an unusual warmth spread through her, like a fire kindled in the cold night air, leaving her with a feeling she couldn’t explain.

It wasn’t fear, nor was it comfort. It was something in between. Something that made her feel seen, yet left her heart unsettled, as if this man held a key to a part of her soul she hadn’t realized was locked away.

Kashi gently pulled her foot back, and the man withdrew his hand. The sudden warmth of his touch lingered for a moment longer than it should have. "Aap thik hai na?" His deep voice cut through the silence, stopping her thoughts in their tracks.

His voice.

It was smooth, laced with genuine concern. The same care that reflected in his eyes. Kashi's heart skipped a beat as she found herself drawn to that familiar tenderness in his gaze, something that made her feel strangely safe. "Ji hum thik hai, aapko lagi toh nhi na?" she asked softly, her eyes lowering to his hands, scanning for any signs of injury.

The man opened his mouth to reply, but before he could speak, a familiar voice interrupted the moment. "Are Hukum Ranisa, yaha hai aap. Chale, bohot der ho gyi hai," Amma called out from a distance, walking toward them.

Kashi turned to see Amma approaching, but her gaze quickly shifted back to the man as a flicker of something passed through his eyes—something she couldn’t quite grasp. As soon as Amma's eyes landed on him, a knowing smile spread across her face, and she came to stand beside Kashi.

"Aa gye aap," Amma said with warmth, her voice filled with a kind of familiarity that startled Kashi. Amma then turned to her. "Kashi, milye Vikram se. Ye aapki suraksha ke liye aaye hai."

Kashi’s head snapped from Amma to the man before her—Vikram. His name echoed in her mind. The mask that had once concealed his identity now felt symbolic, a barrier to the deeper truth his eyes were trying to convey. Those same eyes, which had seemed so intense before, now held a different emotion altogether. It was like they were telling a story of their own, one that begged to be heard.

Kashi stood frozen for a moment, her heart pounding as she tried to make sense of the swirling emotions inside her. Vikram's gaze remained steady on her, unyielding yet soft, like he could see right through her layers of confusion and uncertainty. His presence, though unfamiliar, now felt like it had always been there—waiting, watching, protecting.

The realization hit her with a quiet intensity. She didn’t know this man, not really. And yet, his eyes—those eyes—held a strange sense of recognition, as if they had shared a thousand untold moments. As if he knew her far better than she knew herself.
