There was a soft knock on the door, and a moment later Enid stepped into my room. "Can we talk?" She asked, and I nodded. She walked over and sat down beside me on my bed. "I'm sorry about earlier, I shouldn't have said those things." She said softly, a tone I hadn't thought she was capable of until then. "I need to apologize too. I overreacted, anyone would have asked those questions." I said, looking away. "Friends?" Enid put out her hand with a smile, but I hesitated. I had never really had friends. Allies, yes, but never friends, mostly due to the fear of something happening to them because of me. But like I said before, Enid's enthusiasm is contagious, so I found myself shaking her hand. "Friends." I concluded.
Enid put her arms out as if to hug me, but I immediately pulled away, and she laughed. "You really are like Wednesday. Anyway, Principal Craven said you need to pick an extra curricular activity before the Harvest Festival tomorrow." Enid told me, standing up. "I can show you the clubs that have spots open if you want." I sighed. I don't have many talents, unless you count solving mysteries, sneaking around silently, and being able to function without sleep for days on end. But Enid was already leaving the room, so I got up and followed her.
"The activities that have spots are choir, beekeeping club, archery, fencing, and..." Enid glanced back at me. "The seance society." I nodded, wondering why she had looked at me like that. "Principal Craven wants you to check out all of them." She added as we walked into the Quad, where choir practice was being held. As soon as I saw it, I stopped. "Not a chance." I whispered to Enid, and we turned around. "Okay, then we'll check out the Hummers next. Wednesday and Eugene are the only ones there." She said, wrinkling her nose.
A few minutes later we got to the hives, where Eugene was standing with his smoker. However, my cousin was nowhere to be found. "Where's Wednesday?" I demanded, and Eugene took a step back. I admit my voice sounded sharper than I had intended. "She said she had some urgent business to attend to, and that she couldn't make it today." He said with a shrug. I tried not to think about what she could possibly be up to, and instead turned to Enid. "Let's go to archery now." I said under my breath. We said goodbye to Eugene and turned back towards the school.
"You made the right decision, I hate bees." Enid told me as we approached the school. Xavier was waiting for us by the targets. "You didn't tell me Xavier was doing archery." I whispered. "Does it matter?" She asked, looking surprised. "No." I muttered, staring at the ground.
"Hey." Xavier said when we got to him. "Have you ever done archery before?" I sighed and took a bow and arrow, trying to act as if it wasn't one of the only things I actually liked doing. "Only millions of times." I told him, and shot the arrow. It hit the center of the target, and Xavier raised his eyebrows. "I usually prefer to do it on horseback, just for the extra challenge." I added with a grin. Enid shifted from foot to foot. "I'm feeling like a total third wheel here, so I'm going to go find Wednesday." She said, leaving.
"I'm surprised you're not joining the seance society." Xavier said, taking a bow and arrow for himself. "Why?" I asked, picking up another arrow. "You know, with your parents and everything." I groaned. "Is there anyone Wednesday hasn't told?" I put my bow down and crossed my arms. "All she said is that your parents aren't alive, I swear." Xavier told me. "You don't need to defend Wednesday, she's made it clear that I won't get away innocent this time." I said sharply. He looked surprised. "What do you mean?" Realizing the mistake I had made, I didn't answer, just turned around and started to walk in the opposite direction. "Hey, wait!" Xavier called after me, but I didn't reply. I was done with trying to be nice, and making friends, and liking people. It just wasn't me.
