𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒Arvid was excited, maybe even nervous. He had been planning this date for a solid week, ever since he managed to get tickets to see the Patriots and the Jets. It wasn't just any game; it was his first time ever going to a live football game, and he'd convinced his new girlfriend, Jocelyn, to come along. He knew she wasn't a football fan—hell, she'd never even watched a game before—but he was hoping it would be fun anyway. He wanted her to enjoy it, or at least pretend to, because he liked seeing her happy.
When he picked her up, his heart skipped a beat. Jocelyn stepped out of her house in a Patriots crop top with the number 10 printed on it, the same as his jersey. She'd paired it with high-waisted jeans and her brown hair was curled, bouncing gently over her shoulders. Arvid couldn't help but grin. She was absolutely adorable, and the fact that she was willing to match him made it even better.
"You look amazing," Arvid said as she slid into the passenger seat.
Jocelyn smiled, a little shy but mostly amused. "I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, but thanks."
He chuckled, starting the car. "Don't worry. I'll teach you everything you need to know."
When they arrived at the stadium, it was bustling with fans different jerseys on. Arvid's parents and brother, who had driven separately, were already there, waving them over. Jocelyn liked Arvid's family—they were welcoming, and it was clear they were excited to have her with them.
"Jocelyn, it's good to see you!" his mom said, pulling her into a hug. "I see you're a Patriots fan today."
"Uh, sure, why not?" Jocelyn replied, her tone light, and they all laughed. She was clearly out of her comfort zone, but she was going to give this a try.
They made their way to their seats, which were surprisingly close to the field. The stadium was massive, the bright green of the field stark against the crowds of fans. Jocelyn glanced around, trying to absorb everything.
"So... we're cheering for the team in blue, right?" she asked as they settled in.
"Yup. Patriots all the way," Arvid replied, adjusting his jersey. He looked over at her, catching her eye. "You're nervous, aren't you?"
"A little," she admitted. "I just don't want to make a fool of myself."
"You won't," he said, leaning over to kiss her forehead. "Just stick with me."
The game began with noise, and Jocelyn flinched a bit at the sudden eruption of sound. She glanced up at the screen, which was showing some stats she didn't understand. As the first play started, she tried to follow along but quickly got lost. Her eyes darted between the players, the ball, and the scoreboard, trying to piece together what was happening.
Arvid, noticing her confused expression, laughed softly. "Okay, so basically... when the team has the ball, they're trying to get it to the other end of the field. That's a touchdown."
She nodded, still looking puzzled. "Right... I think I got that. Everyone knows what a touchdown is."
For the next few plays, she continued to watch intently, but her confusion didn't go away. "Wait, why did they just stop? Didn't they just start running?"
Arvid bit back a smile. "That was a tackle. They're trying to stop the guy with the ball."
"Oh, okay. That's... kind of mean, but I get it."
Every few minutes, Jocelyn would ask another question, and Arvid would do his best to explain. Sometimes he'd mess with her hair as he talked, twirling a strand around his finger, trying to keep things lighthearted. She'd swat his hand away playfully but then ask another question.
