The air in the café was thick with tension as Emily, Jack, and Jenna listened intently to Rachel's story. Every word she spoke felt like a thread in a larger tapestry of deceit, weaving together the fate of Sarah and the sinister workings of Sinclair's."I remember the last time I spoke to Sarah," Rachel continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "She seemed so determined to get to the bottom of whatever was going on, but there was something different about her-like she was afraid. She told me that she'd found evidence of something big, something that could shake the company to its core."
Emily leaned in closer, her heart racing. "What kind of evidence? Do you remember what she said?"
Rachel frowned, her brow furrowing in thought. "Not much. Just that it involved some financial records, discrepancies in the funding for Project Allegiance. She was convinced that it wasn't just a failed initiative but a cover for something illegal. She mentioned some names, but it's all a blur now."
Jenna glanced at Emily and Jack, her eyes wide with concern. "We need to find those records. If they tie into the project and Sarah's disappearance, it could be the breakthrough we need."
Rachel nodded, her gaze flicking to the door. "Be careful if you do. Graves has eyes everywhere. I don't want to put you in danger."
"Thank you for warning us," Emily said, her voice steady. "We can handle ourselves, but your insight is invaluable. We need to know what we're up against."
The café was bustling around them, but in that moment, it felt like they were the only three people in the world. Rachel's fear was palpable, and it only fueled Emily's determination. They had to find the truth-for Sarah, for the others who had suffered, and for themselves.
"Do you have any idea where Sarah might have kept the evidence?" Jack asked, his mind racing with possibilities.
Rachel shook her head. "I wish I did. But if she thought she was in danger, she might have hidden it away. Maybe at home or in a safe deposit box? I know she had a personal stash of documents she never let anyone see."
Emily's heart sank at the thought. "Do you think we could visit her apartment? Maybe there's something left behind that could help us."
"Maybe," Rachel said, her eyes darting nervously. "But I wouldn't recommend going there without caution. Graves could have already been through her things or alerted others to watch for anyone suspicious."
Jack interjected, "If we're careful, we can keep a low profile. We'll go in and out. We have to check it out; it might be our only shot at finding more evidence."
Rachel sighed, her shoulders slumping. "I wish I could help you more. I'd go with you, but I can't risk it. If Graves sees me with you, he'll know I'm involved."
"Understood," Emily replied, her resolve firm. "But if you think of anything else, please let us know. You have no idea how much this means to us."
As they spoke, a server brought over their drinks, the clinking of cups bringing a momentary distraction from the seriousness of the conversation. Emily took a sip of her coffee, the warmth grounding her as she contemplated their next steps.
"Let's keep our plans fluid," Jack suggested, glancing at the clock on the wall. "If we're going to check out Sarah's place, we should do it tonight when it's dark. Less chance of being seen."
