Jamie's point of view
“Sorry about this.” he said.
“About what?” I asked, wrapping my hands around the mug to warm them.
“All of this. The flowers, Samuel’s story, the rain...and this little hiccup.” he said, referring to the downpour keeping us stuck in the bookstore. “I totally ruined your plans.”
“No, you didn't.”
“I know I did. You don’t have to defend me.”
“Fine, if it can make you feel better, you completely messed it up. And I’m a little bit annoyed about it.”
“A little bit?”
“Okay. Very annoyed.” I corrected for his sake, which brought him smile.
“You’re on holiday. This isn’t how holidays are supposed to go.”
“Never I ever complained.”
We locked eyes for a moment as the rain pounded outside. I got lost in Collin’s piercing blue gaze, feeling drawn in like it was a deep ocean. His damp, tousled brown hair just enhanced his charm. And at this very right moment, a terrible thought had the bright idea to pop in my head.
No, no, no. Jamie, drop it.
But he looks so kissable.
I said no!
“How’s the coffee?” he brought me back to reality.
“It’s really black.” I said, instinctively. My mind was still trying to shake off the earlier…tension?
“I meant how does it taste?”
“Oh, um... it’s good.”
“There’s sugar if you want some…”
“No, it’s fine. That’s nice of you. I like it this way...natural and smooth.” I said, meeting his gaze again.
“We’re still talking about coffee, right?”
“Can I check out the books?” I cleared my throat, sensing the awkwardness between us.
“Yeah, of course.”
I needed a little space to let the adrenaline fade. But with a coffee in hand, it really wasn’t easy. I wandered through the aisles, taking my time to explore the bookstore’s collection.
“Do you read any of these books?” I called out from a distance.
“Now and then.”
“Do you know every authors here?”
“Some of them, yeah.”
I paused and continued looking around before asking again “What about Ernest Hemingway?”
“It’d be a crime not to know him.” I could hear him chuckle.
“The first time I noticed his name was in a book by Susie Morgenstern called Letter of Love from Zero to Ten. I think I was eleven when my aunt gave it to me for my birthday.”
“And you still have the book?”
“Yep and it’s like new.”
“That’s great.”
I set my cup down, grabbed a book that caught my eye, read the title and the synopsis, and randomly flipped to a page, reading a passage that has captured my attention.
“Collin?”
“Yeah?” he replied, his voice deep.
“I think I found something interesting. Want to hear it?”
“Hold on, I’m coming over.”
A few seconds later, he appeared next to me.
“What is it?” he asked, leaning in close to see the book, so close I could feel his warmth.
My heart raced as I read the excerpt, struggling to focus on the words with him so near.
“It's an excerpt from Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. He says: "The power of a glance has been so much abused in love stories, that it has come to be disbelieved in. Few people dare now to say that two beings have fallen in love because they have looked at each other. Yet it is in this way that love begins, and in this way only."
I slowly lifted my head towards Collin and I saw him locking his eyes on mine. It was that same glance I just read. It was so evident in him and I could feel it upon me. I became instantly vulnerable and when he pressed his lips to mine, time froze and an explosive ecstasy overwhelmed my whole beings.
