The days after my meeting with Aarav felt heavier than usual. His warning echoed in my mind, creating an unsettling tension I couldn't shake off. I tried to focus on my classes, assignments, and spending time with Aisha and Diya, but no matter how hard I tried, I kept coming back to that conversation in the café. Aarav's mysterious world had somehow become a part of mine, and even though he had urged me to stay out of it, I couldn't help but feel like I was already too deep.

The texts from the unknown number stopped, but the silence didn't bring any peace. If anything, it made things worse. What was I supposed to do now? Pretend none of this ever happened? Ignore the fact that Aarav had essentially admitted his family was involved in something dangerous? The thought alone sent a chill down my spine.

Aisha and Diya were quick to notice my change in mood. I couldn't hide the fact that I was distracted, and my usual energy had dulled. It wasn't long before Aisha, always the more intuitive of the two, cornered me in the library one afternoon.

"Ananya, what's going on? You've been acting weird for days now, ever since that café meet-up with Aarav." She didn't sound angry, but her voice had a firm edge to it, the kind she used when she knew I was hiding something.

Diya, who had been working on an assignment, looked up from her laptop, her brow furrowed in concern. "Yeah, you've been really off lately. Is it something to do with him? Is Aarav treating you okay?"

I bit my lip, unsure of how much I should tell them. Aarav had been clear about keeping his world separate from mine, but these were my best friends. They deserved to know something, especially if it meant keeping them out of harm's way too.

"It's... complicated," I began, my voice barely above a whisper. "Aarav isn't exactly who we thought he was. His family's involved in some dangerous stuff, and I've been getting these weird messages telling me to stay away from him. I think it's serious, and Aarav told me to keep my distance-for my safety."

Aisha's eyes widened, and Diya gasped, setting her laptop aside. "Wait, what? What kind of dangerous stuff are we talking about?" Diya asked, leaning closer.

I shrugged, feeling the weight of the unknown pressing down on me. "I don't know. He wouldn't tell me much, but whatever it is, it's serious enough for me to get these warnings."

Aisha sat back, crossing her arms. "And you're okay with that? You're just going to let him push you away?"

"I don't really have a choice," I admitted. "He said it's for my own good, and I believe him. I mean, you should've seen him. He looked genuinely worried, like this isn't something to mess with."

Diya sighed, glancing between me and Aisha. "Still, this doesn't sit right with me. I get that Aarav's trying to protect you, but keeping you in the dark feels... I don't know, wrong?"

Aisha nodded in agreement. "Exactly. You can't just be left guessing. If you're already involved, you have a right to know what's going on. We need to figure out who's sending those messages and why."

I stared at my friends, their determination clear on their faces. It was comforting to know they had my back, but I wasn't sure how far I wanted to go with this. Was it worth the risk?

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed. My heart jumped into my throat, but this time it wasn't an unknown number. It was Aarav. I showed the screen to Aisha and Diya, who exchanged glances before I answered.

"Hey," I said, trying to sound casual, but my voice betrayed my nerves.

"Ananya, we need to talk," Aarav said, his voice steady but tense. "Can you meet me tonight? Same café as before."

A million questions rushed through my mind, but I managed to keep my tone even. "Okay. I'll be there."

We hung up, and Aisha immediately leaned in. "What did he say?"

"He wants to meet tonight. I guess I'll find out what's going on," I said, my stomach twisting with a mix of anticipation and dread.

"You're not going alone, are you?" Diya asked, her concern obvious.

"I'll be fine. Aarav's not going to hurt me," I reassured her, but even as I said the words, I wasn't entirely sure. Not that I thought Aarav would physically harm me, but there was no telling what I was walking into.

As evening approached, I made my way to the café, my nerves buzzing the entire walk there. When I arrived, Aarav was already waiting, sitting in the same corner booth as before. He looked tired, more so than the last time we'd met, and there was a tension in his posture that hadn't been there before.

"Ananya," he greeted me as I slid into the seat across from him. His eyes scanned the café, as if checking to make sure we weren't being watched.

"What's going on, Aarav?" I asked, cutting straight to the point. "You said there was something I needed to know."

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I didn't want to drag you into this, but it looks like I don't have a choice anymore. The messages you've been getting-they're not just random threats. Someone's watching you, and they're trying to scare you off."

I swallowed hard, feeling my pulse quicken. "Watching me? Why?"

"Because they think you're too close to finding out something you shouldn't. My family... we're involved in things-business dealings that aren't exactly legal. But it's not just us. There are other powerful people involved, and they don't want outsiders snooping around. That's why you've been getting these warnings."

I stared at him, trying to process what he was saying. "So what happens now? Am I in danger?"

Aarav's gaze softened, and for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes. "I'll protect you, Ananya. But I need you to trust me. This isn't something you can fight on your own. I need to handle this."

A lump formed in my throat as I nodded slowly. "I trust you, Aarav. But this is a lot to take in."

"I know," he said quietly. "And I hate that you're involved at all. I didn't want this for you."

Before I could respond, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and frowned, standing up abruptly. "I have to go. Something's come up."

"Aarav, wait-" I started, but he was already moving toward the door. He turned back to me, his expression conflicted.

"I'll explain everything soon. Just... stay safe. And don't respond to any more messages."

With that, he was gone, leaving me sitting alone in the café, my mind racing. I had no idea what Aarav was dealing with, but one thing was clear: I was now part of something far bigger than I ever imagined, and there was no turning back.

As I walked home, my phone buzzed again. I hesitated before checking it, half expecting another warning. Instead, it was a message from Aarav: I'll keep you safe. I promise.

I stared at the message, my heart pounding. But despite his promise, I couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to get even more dangerous. Whatever Aarav was involved in, I was now caught in the middle-and I had a feeling the worst was yet to come.
