ANANYA'S POV
The party was in full swing by the time we arrived. The bass from the speakers thudded through the floor, mingling with the buzz of conversation and laughter. Diya was already dragging Aisha and me toward the dance floor, but something in me hesitated. Normally, I'd be right there with them, losing myself in the music, but tonight, I felt... off. Restless, maybe. Like there was something else I should be doing, somewhere else I needed to be.
"Go ahead, I'll catch up in a bit," I told them, offering a quick smile to reassure them I was fine. Diya gave me a questioning look, but Aisha just nodded—she knew me too well to press.
I slipped away from the crowd, weaving through the throngs of people until I found myself outside on the balcony. The cool night air was a welcome relief from the heat and noise inside, and I took a deep breath, savoring the quiet. The city stretched out before me, its lights twinkling like a sea of stars.
Leaning against the railing, I let my thoughts drift, but they didn't get far. My eyes caught on a figure standing at the far end of the balcony, his back turned to me. He was tall, with broad shoulders that suggested strength, yet his posture was relaxed, almost contemplative. There was something about him that drew me in, something that made it impossible to look away.
Without really thinking about it, I found myself walking toward him. My heels clicked softly against the concrete, but he didn't turn around. When I reached his side, I hesitated for just a moment before speaking.
"Hey," I said, trying to keep my voice light. "Mind if I join you?"
He turned slowly, and as he did, the dim light from inside caught his face. He was... gorgeous. Not just in the conventional sense, but in a way that felt almost timeless, like he could have stepped out of a painting. His eyes were what really struck me, though. They were dark, almost black in this light, but they held a depth that made me feel like he could see right through me.
"Not at all," he replied, his voice calm, with just a hint of curiosity. "It's a nice night, isn't it?"
"Yeah," I agreed, leaning against the railing beside him. "Sometimes it's nice to escape the chaos, you know?"
He nodded, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I do. It's easy to get lost in all of that," he gestured vaguely toward the party inside, "but out here, it's different. Calmer."
I studied him for a moment, intrigued by the contrast he presented. Here was a guy who didn't seem to fit the typical college party scene, yet there he was, standing on the balcony of a party that was anything but quiet. "So, what's your story?" I asked, genuinely curious. "You don't seem like the type who comes to these things just for the sake of it."
He chuckled softly, a sound that was almost lost in the night air. "You could say that. I'm here more out of obligation than anything else. Friends dragged me along, figured I might as well see what all the fuss was about."
I laughed, nodding in understanding. "I get that. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, right? I'm Ananya, by the way."
"Aarav," he replied, extending his hand. His grip was firm but gentle, his skin warm against mine. "Nice to meet you, Ananya."
"Likewise, Aarav," I said, holding onto his hand for just a moment longer than necessary before letting go. "So, what do you think of the party so far? Worth the fuss?"
He glanced back toward the room, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "It's... interesting. But I think I prefer this," he said, turning his gaze back to the city. "The quiet. The view."
I followed his gaze, taking in the cityscape with fresh eyes. It really was beautiful, the way the lights flickered like fireflies against the dark backdrop of the night. "Yeah, it's something, isn't it? I come out here sometimes just to think. Or not think, really. Just to be."
"Just to be," he repeated, almost as if testing out the words. "I like that. It's easy to forget how to just... exist, you know? Without all the noise, the expectations."
His words resonated with me in a way I hadn't expected. "Yeah," I said softly, "I do know."
We fell into a comfortable silence then, the kind that didn't need to be filled with words. It was strange how at ease I felt with him, a guy I'd only just met. But there was something about him—something that made me want to know more, to peel back the layers and see what was underneath that calm exterior.
"So, Aarav," I said after a while, breaking the silence, "what do you do when you're not being dragged to parties?"
He smiled again, but there was something guarded in his eyes this time. "I'm a student, like you, I assume. And I help out with the family business when I can."
"Oh?" I tilted my head, intrigued. "What kind of business?"
"Just... business," he said vaguely, his tone light but not offering much more. "It's not as interesting as it sounds, trust me."
I laughed, sensing that he wasn't ready to dive into that topic just yet. "Fair enough. I guess we all have our secrets."
"Yeah," he agreed, his smile softening. "I guess we do."
The more we talked, the more I found myself drawn to him. There was a quiet strength to Aarav, a sense of calm that I found almost magnetic. And yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to him than he was letting on, something hidden just beneath the surface. But I didn't push. We'd only just met, after all.
Eventually, we exchanged numbers—just a casual thing, but I couldn't help the little thrill that ran through me as I saved his contact. "Maybe I'll see you around?" I offered, hoping it didn't sound too eager.
"I'd like that," he said, his voice sincere. "I'm sure we will."
As I walked back into the party, I couldn't help but glance over my shoulder at Aarav one last time. He was still standing there, looking out over the city, lost in thought. There was something about him that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but I knew one thing for sure—I wanted to see him again.
And as I rejoined Diya and Aisha, my mind kept drifting back to the mysterious stranger on the balcony, wondering what secrets he held and what our next encounter might bring.
