Kaitlyn looked down in shock as she realized what she had just done.
"Holy shit, holy shit! Dylan I just- I just cut your fucking hand off!" The girl yelled, lifting her hands on top of her head and backing up into the table behind her. Her panic changed direction slightly, when her tall and newly handless friend started laughing softly. He was delirious.
"Hhah.. ha -" He slurred before looking down at his arm and seemingly coming back to reality.
"Oh fuck my hand. Fuck. Why'd you do that, Kait?!" He hisses through his teeth as he grabbed the end of his arm to try and stop the bleeding.
"You told me to!" She exclaimed, throwing her hands out in front of her in his direction.
"That was a bad idea..." he huffed and set his head down on the floor.
"Shit, oh god... I know I'm the nurse, but god. I've never seen something so bad." She sighs, looking around for anything to patch him up with. She turned around and spotted a first aid kit under the table the radio was on. She quickly snatched it and started doing everything she could to help her closest friend at camp. Sure, her and Jacob were childhood best friends, but he had been following Emma around all summer. There was no use trying to hang out with him one on one. Dylan, on the other hand, she actually had a lot in common with. They shared a love for bad jokes and stinging remarks, though Dylan had a more... flirtatious way about it than her. She knew she couldn't let him die now. He was still young. As Kaitlyn was patching her lanky friend up, thinking the worst, someone suddenly slammed the door open, causing Kaitlyn to jump a bit and push her palm into Dylans open wound. Dylan reacted, face still down against the floor, slightly Muffeling his scream of pain as he dug his surviving hand into the wooden floor. He never even looked up to see who was at the door.
"Kaitlyn, are you guys ok?" Ryan said, looking down at her, Nick and Abi standing behind him, peeking out their heads over each of his shoulders.
She was about to speak up when Abi suddenly pulled a shocked face and slapped her hand to her mouth."Oh my god, I think I'm gonna puke -" she yelped before backing down the huts stairs and wreching to the side of the building. Ryan looked down to try and make sense of her violent reaction, finally seeing it. Dylans hand on the floor, completely separated from his body. Ryan gasped in shock before stepping a bit closer to examine the situation. The hand looked dark grey and veiny, getting darker at the fingers. He could see now the blood all over the floor and on his friends, as well as Dylan with his face against the floor, breathing heavily and obviously crying.
"What did you do?" Ryan asked, looking at Kaitlyn, not exactly judging her, but unable to figure out what could've possibly happened for her to have to do that.
"You- you weren't there, Ryan! You don't understand!" She snapped back, with a panicked look stamped on her face.
"That thing it fucking bit him! It tried dragging him out of the hut, but I pulled him back somehow."
Ryan looked down at Dylan, still sobbing and occasionally swearing between breaths from the pain. The pain was probably so distracting that he still didn't realize anyone else was there.
"He told me to do it, and I just...
Fuck! I listened. I guess." Kaitlyn sighed. She was starting to realize the ramifications of what she'd done. Kaitlyn was a tough cookie, but even she started tearing up."I'm sorry, Dylan. I'm so sorry," she said softly, grabbing his other arm lightly and stroking it. Dylan finally looked up.
"Hey, don't cry... it's okay, Kait,
" He said, trying his hardest not to slur his words, which he partially succeeded in."It'll be fine. You'll just have to 'lend me a hand' every now and then." He joked and pointed in her direction with his now only hand. He laughs softly before pulling a serious face
"But seriously, can I have some painkillers."
"Right," Kaityln said, whiping her tears with the back of her hand and shuffling through the first aid kit. Ryan turned to Nick and Abi
"Are you guys okay? He asked sternly. Abi had a sad look plastered on her face, and Nick was still in bad shape, but they both nodded solemnly. Ryan looked back at Dylan and then back to Nick and Abi quickly, like he was trying to Make a plan."Fuck uhm... okay, Kaitlyn? I think we should take them all somewhere safe. Maybe the pool house?" He said, looking away from her as he said it. He couldn't keep his eyes off Dylan, on the floor, and in shock. Dylan had always been to nice to Ryan. In fact, he was one of the few counselors who actually tried to talk to him. Though maybe it was a bit of his fault for not being very inviting, he still wished they would've gotten closer. Ryan even knew that Dylan had a huge crush on him. Seeing him so serious, and in so much pain, killed Ryan on the inside. He wished he had let Dylan know that he felt the same way before all this horrible shit happened. Now he doesn't know if Dylan will ever want to see him again. We wonder if seeing him would just be a big reminder of the day they all want to forget.
"Yeah.. yeah, I think you're right." Kaitlyn sighed as she lifted dylans head and started feeding him some pills.
"Who are you talking to?" Dylan asked her with a quizzical look on his face.
"Kaitlyn was starting to get up and lift Dylan by his arm before stopping in her tracks, looking confused.
"What?" She replied. "Dylan, you know Ryan, Nick, and Abi are right there?" She said, lifting him to his feet despite their extreme weight difference. Ryan saw she was struggling and quickly went to dylans other side and put his arm around his own shoulder before setting his hand across Dylans back and onto his hip.
Dylan looked in front of him, and to his surprise, Kaitlyn was right. Abi and Nick were standing in the doorway, one looking extremely worried, while the other just looked... so bad. Dylan thought Nick might even need more medical attention than himself in the moment. He then turned his head to the side, and there was Ryan. Had he really not noticed they were there? And how had he not noticed that his summer camp crush was... holding him. Oh my god. Dylan suddenly flushed bright red and was almost too tired to make a joke. Key word being 'almost'.
Maybe it was the painkillers kicking in quickly from his stomach being relatively empty aside from half a beer, but Dylan suddenly didn't feel so bad."I was thinking your hands being on me like this would be a littleeee different." He smirked at Ryan as they all 3 walked out of the hut and down the steps. He chuckled to himself a little and then looked around at everyone, just looking at him. They all stayed silent and looked so sad. He hated when people looked sad like that. He learned how to make people laugh at a young age, and it felt like his purpose. If they weren't laughing, then he was failing.
"Tough crowd." He sighed as they continued walking towards the pool house.
