An orangey glow enveloped the city in a warm embrace as the sun hid behind the clouds, afraid of the darkness that would soon completely cover the empty streets with a thick blanket. The year was 1952, 2 years ago Los Angeles had been buzzing with starlets and singers, now it was empty.
People who visited went missing mysteriously without any trace, almost as if they’d never existed at all.
Those who did come out alive swore never to go back. A city that was once filled with love and laughter, was now the stuff of your darkest nightmares….The only things left were mysterious angel statues and gravestones with the missing people’s names on but they were from decades or even centuries ago… So what happened to the people? Why did the ones who came back alive never speak about what they saw? Why were there black and white pictures of missing people scattered around the city like clues? Was someone or something creating a trap, for someone who couldn't control their curiosity? Someone like the doctor?
“Sarah hold both those levers down for me” the doctor asked her as he raced around the console pressing buttons and pulling levers whilst gazing in awe at the time rotor moving up and down and glowing at the centre of the console. She grabbed both the levers and yanked them down, the TARDIS shook violently knocking Sarah off balance. “Remember where the wardrobe room is Sarah? Down the corridor, past the bins…” he looked over at her grinning. Sarah jumped up and down with excitement and ran down the TARDIS corridor shouting behind her “turn left, it's opposite the library”. The doctor stood looking in the direction of the corridor as she finished his sentence. “Oh she remembered” he whispered to himself realising that she never forgot him not in the ten years they had been apart and that filled his heart with love for his best friend in the whole of time and space.
A few moments later, the TARDIS began materialising in 1952 and K-9’s robotic voice broke the doctor out of his daydream. “Master, I have examined the newspapers from Los Angeles, 1952… and there seems to be some sort of threat..everyone has been evacuated.” The doctor raced to the library , grabbing the newspaper off the floor and reading it as fast as possible. “Oh dear..” Sarah stood in the doorway with a beautiful sapphire halter dress with a midi skirt and white sunglasses sat on top of her head and cream coloured ballet flats. The doctor gently gasped "Oh Sarah, you look...just wow..." he adjusts his hat and clears his throat. "Teeny tiny problem though...can't exaggerate how small it is but...um.." he taps his fingers nervously on the console and turns his back to Sarah and K-9.
Sarah raises her eyebrow and puts her hands on her hips "Why, what's happened?". "I don't want to upset you Sarah...this was supposed to be our time to relax for once...to properly talk about what has happened to the both of us in the time we've been apart... we never have that chance we were always caught up in something else but there's a slight issue". Sarah sighs and folds her arms "let me guess something has happened and you need my help to fix it...wow what a huge shock..never time to sit and talk and at least pretend to care about how unwanted I've felt for the past decade..just you rushing off to save the universe again and dragging your useless little assistant along for the ride."
The doctor turns to face Sarah once more with confusion and hurt written across his face. "What do you mean pretend to care... I do care.. I just.. I'm just bad at showing it sometimes" he looks down to the ground."Not good at showing it?!!! You abandoned me for TEN years and then came back expecting me to drop everything and come with you and me being the absolute idiot I am said yes. You don't understand how much I've missed you... I've questioned myself constantly since you just left me...you showed me things that made me question everything... how on earth can you expect me to just go back to normal life after that???!" Sarah begins to cry. The doctor reaches out to touch her but she shoves him away "don't try and apologize it's too late.. that's the problem with you, you pick up someone from Earth, you promise to show them the stars and then you dump them back home with just a simple goodbye..then you forget about them, knowing for an absolute fact that they could never forget about you.. and they will spend the rest of their tiny little lives waiting for you to come back for them...and do you know what? Even if you do come back..you don't ever even have the decency to ask how you chucking them back on earth as if they were nothing really affected them..you just drag them back into danger".
The doctor looks away in shame "when you've travelled and loved and lost as much as I have.. you learn one thing.. do you want to know what that is Sarah?" Sarah looks up at him and sighs "What?". "That sometimes it's better to leave someone than to watch them die in front of your eyes..and realise that it was all you fault... I was only trying to protect you."
