The adventure had been long and perilous, the nightmares of the sewers forever leaving their stain within the deer. Finally escaping such a hellscape brought immense relief, never happier to see the sky again. Moving for what felt like days, the trio wandered along the horizon, crossing flowering forests of greenery and hopping over rivers. Drexel pretended not to see every time Bambi sneakily nuzzled Ronno's shoulder; the two were so enamored with one another it felt intoxicating. He was happy for them, sure, but third-wheeling to their displays of affection was getting tiring.
The fourth time Ronno nipped Bambi's tail pushed the dove over the edge.
"Okay!" he abruptly announced, dramatically spreading his wings. "I... am going to fly up and double-check we're moving in the right direction."
"Are we... too much?" Bambi laughed nervously.
Drexel opened his beak to say something, but remembered he valued their friendship and instead gingerly shook his head. He flew off Bambi's back so quickly he would have broken the sound barrier, disappearing into the sky like a wish upon a star.
Watching him go, Bambi cocked his head. "We were too much for him?"
"Eh, you know how birds are," Ronno waved his hoof, dismissing the situation.
"You sure? I think we were being a little inconsiderate."
"How is it inconsiderate? I'm just enjoying my sights," pulling a sly grin, Ronno trailed his vision along Bambi's side. "Nothing wrong with enjoying what I have."
"Wow, how immensely objectifying of you," Bambi rolled his eyes at the comment. "We should probably tone it down a smidge, you know?"
"I just got you, I can't enjoy it?"
"You'll have plenty of time to enjoy me," the prince leaned in, bringing his voice to an alluring whisper, only to transition into sass. "Preferably once we get back home and instead of the open wilds where anything could walk up on us!"
"Cool your antlers, princess," Ronno touched their noses together, tickled at how cute Bambi's anger was. "I'll tone it down, but only if you stop being so cute."
"I will shove these antlers so far up your-"
They were interrupted as a dove came down from the clouds, having flown ahead for not just sightseeing but a quick meal, evident by the worm in his beak. Drexel hovered down, holding the wriggling detritivore and swallowed it whole, then perched on Bambi's head.
"Oh good, you're arguing," he said with an exhausted tone of voice. "Nice break from the PDA."
"What'd you see up there?" Bambi asked, giggling at Ronno's twisting expression of disgust at witnessing the worm's demise.
"I saw the edge of a forest, believe it or not," said the dove. "I think we're getting close to home, or, your home, that is."
"Ugh, thank the stars," Ronno hung his head, groaning with exhaustion. "Almost out of Man territory."
"We've actually been 'off' their territory for quite a while, they don't usually leave the city."
"Except for the ones that shot my mother," came Bambi's sudden interjection, his voice flat and resigned of any emotion. Both companions were left completely dumbstruck, Drexel staring in exclamation and Ronno shutting up with a pained expression.
The dove ruffled his feathers, "I'm- I'm sorry, I-"
"Don't worry about it," replied the prince quickly, his tone low. "The farther away we are from the city, the more I can relax."
