Chapter II . Calm Before the Storm
London made her way up the long drive toward her house, She paused halfway glancing over her shoulder to confirm that the Pogues had driven off, their van disappearing into the distance back toward The Cut. With a deep breath she turned back to the front door of her home carefully twisting the door handle, trying to make as little noise as possible. The last thing she needed was an argument tonight. However her attempt at sneaking in failed almost immediately. As she stepped inside she was greeted by the sight of her parents sitting in the foyer, waiting. Her mother, dressed in her usual pristine outfit, stared daggers at her while her father sat in silence, his eyes more tired than angry.
"And what time do you call this London Irvine?" her mother's sharp, every word dripping with disapproval. "We've been reminding you about this event for weeks, and you've spent the entire day running around with them—getting dirt, only to come home late!"
London cringed at the emphasis on "them," the way her mother always made the Pogues sound like they were beneath her, as if London was wasting her life by spending time with them.
Her heart beat a little faster,"I'm sorry mum. I lost track of time, i'll go get ready now—I promise I won't be long."
Her mother wasn't satisfied, though. "You better not make us late for this London. I swear to God," she muttered, her voice trailing off slightly as London dashed up the stairs. Her father, who had been silent this whole time, leaned over trying to calm her mother down with a few hushed words. London didn't catch what he said, but she could hear the weariness in his tone. She knew he wanted to keep the peace, even if it meant standing by and letting her mother run the show.
It hadn't always been this way. When she was younger her dad had been her biggest supporter—her rock. They used to be close, spending time together, just the two of them. But as London got older and started hanging out with the Pogues, that bond faded. He wasn't angry with her the way her mum was, but there was a distance between them now.
Her mother on the other hand, became impossible. Every little thing London did seemed to set her off, especially in the past year. Ever since London's attitude changed her mother had been relentless, constantly criticising her. London wasn't even sure if her mother even liked her anymore.
Rushing into her bathroom, London quickly stripped out of her clothes and jumped into the shower, She was quietly thanking herself for washing her hair the night before. Stepping out, she towel-dried her skin and hurried to her closet, pulling out a white dress that hugged her curves and made her sun-kissed tan pop. It was form-fitting but not too revealing, just enough to satisfy her mother's expectations while still making her feel like herself. She applied a bit of makeup, summer made her skin glow naturally anyway.
As she slipped into her heels and grabbed her purse, she felt that familiar tension settling in her chest. These events always came with strings attached—fake smiles, forced conversations, and Kooks pretending they cared about anything beyond themselves. But at least she'd be able to sneak a drink or two to make it tolerable.
Descending the stairs, she found her parents waiting at the bottom. Her mother eyed her carefully, scanning her from head to toe. London braced herself for criticism but was met with a terse nod of approval instead. "Let's go," her mother said curtly, turning on her heel and leading the way out to the car.
London followed in silence, sliding into the backseat of the sleek, black SUV. Her father got in next to her, while her mother took the passenger seat up front, already pulling out her phone to check the event details.
The ride to the party was filled with tense silence, the hum of the engine the only sound as they drove through the winding roads of Figure Eight. Her father glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "You okay, Lon?" he asked, his voice soft, almost as if he didn't want her mother to hear.
She forced a smile. "Yeah, Dad. I'm fine."
He didn't push further, just nodded and focused back on the road, though she could tell he didn't entirely believe her.
