The Proposal

Elle's POV-

The talking stage had been like a dance—slow, careful steps forward, each conversation revealing a little more about each other. But there was always an underlying question: where were we heading? Even though I felt comfortable with him, a part of me had been waiting for that moment when the dynamic between us would change.

And then, one day, it finally happened.

We had spent the afternoon in our usual spot by the campus fountain, talking about classes and future plans. There was nothing particularly different about that day—or so I thought. He seemed slightly distracted, like his mind was elsewhere, but I didn’t think much of it. That was, until we started walking toward the bus stop, and I noticed him slow down, almost hesitant.

I looked over at him, curious. "Everything okay?"

He paused for a moment, rubbing the back of his neck in that nervous way he always did when he was overthinking. “Actually, there’s something I’ve been wanting to say,” he started, his voice a little shaky, betraying his usual calm demeanor.

I raised an eyebrow, surprised. “What is it?”

He took a deep breath, as if he was summoning every ounce of courage he had. Then, before I could say another word, he turned to face me fully, his eyes locking with mine. There was an intensity in his gaze I hadn’t seen before, and suddenly, the air between us felt charged with an unspoken energy.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a while,” he said, his words measured but sincere. “I know we’ve only been talking for a few weeks, but… I feel something with you. Something real. I don’t want to keep dancing around it anymore.”

My heart began to race as I realized what he was leading up to. A mix of excitement and anxiety flooded me, but I kept quiet, letting him finish.

“I want to be with you,” he continued, his voice softening. “Like, really be with you. I’m not just interested in talking or being friends. I want something more. I want us to be… together.”

For a moment, time seemed to stand still. His words hung in the air between us, full of promise and hope. My mind raced, trying to process what had just happened. I had been waiting for this, hadn’t I? Waiting for him to say the words that would finally solidify whatever it was that had been blossoming between us.

But even as my heart fluttered with excitement, a small part of me couldn’t help but wonder—was this really what I wanted? His words were sweet, yes. But words, I had learned, could only take you so far. Would his actions follow through on the promises he was making now? Could I trust him to be consistent, to back up these words with something more tangible?

I looked at him, searching his face for sincerity, for something that would reassure me. And in that moment, he looked vulnerable—like he was laying everything out in front of me, hoping I wouldn’t turn him down. It was a side of him I hadn’t seen before, and it tugged at my heartstrings.

“I… I don’t know what to say,” I finally managed to whisper, my mind still racing.

“Just say yes,” he said, a small, hopeful smile playing on his lips. “Let’s give this a chance. I know it might seem fast, but I’ve never felt this way before. I want to be with you.”

There it was. The words that could change everything. I felt my heart pounding in my chest as I stood there, staring at him. The logical side of me told me to be cautious, to take things slow. But the part of me that had been caught up in the whirlwind of this blossoming romance wanted to leap into the unknown, to say yes and see where it would take us.

I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment. “Okay,” I said softly, a smile tugging at my lips. “Yes. Let’s give it a chance.”

His face lit up, the tension in his shoulders melting away as he stepped closer, his hand reaching for mine. In that moment, everything felt right. The doubts that had been swirling in my mind faded, replaced by a sense of warmth and anticipation for what was to come.

We were no longer just two people talking and exchanging glances. We were something more now—something real. And as we walked hand in hand through the campus, I couldn’t help but feel like this was the start of a new chapter in both of our lives.

But even as excitement bubbled within me, that quiet voice in the back of my mind remained, whispering a familiar truth: words don’t matter if they aren’t followed by action. And only time would tell if his words were just the beginning of a real love story or a fleeting romance destined to fade.

In the days following his proposal, everything felt new, different, as if the world had shifted slightly on its axis. There was an undeniable excitement coursing through me, a thrill that came with the beginning of something new. We were no longer stuck in the uncertainty of the “talking stage.” We are together now. Officially.

But with that excitement came something else—an undercurrent of fear. It was subtle at first, barely noticeable beneath the surface of our blossoming relationship, but it was there. The thought of what this meant, what this could lead to, was both exhilarating and terrifying.

We continued to spend more time together, and for the most part, it was everything I had imagined it would be. He became a constant presence in my life, whether it was walking to class together, grabbing coffee in between breaks, or simply sitting side by side in the library, working silently but stealing glances at each other. His smile, his laugh, the way he could make even the most mundane moments feel special—it all felt perfect.

A Night to Remember

We spent hours under that tree, talking about everything and nothing. He told me about how nervous he’d been, how he’d rehearsed this moment in his head a hundred times.

“And yet, I still managed to fumble my words,” he admitted, running a hand through his hair.

“You didn’t fumble,” I assured him, smiling. “You just… took the scenic route.”

“Scenic route?” he repeated, laughing. “I’ll take it if it means I got to hear you say yes.”

I rolled my eyes playfully but couldn’t hide the happiness I felt. For the first time in a long while, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

The Promise of Something New

By the time we said goodnight, the campus was quiet, and the stars had begun to fill the sky. As I walked back to my hostel, I couldn’t stop smiling. The boy who had once been a stranger was now someone I couldn’t imagine my life without.

It wasn’t just the proposal itself that stayed with me but the way he’d done it—with honesty, courage, and a vulnerability that spoke volumes about who he was.

It felt like the beginning of something new, something beautiful. And for the first time, I let myself believe in the possibility of love.
