The days flew by, and soon October had settled into its final weeks. Jamie had been counting down to Sienna's birthday, but instead of excitement, he felt a growing anxiety. What do you get the girl who seemed to have everything?
He paced his room, mentally scrolling through options. A cute stuffed animal? Too childish. A fancy dinner? They'd already done that. Jamie's brow furrowed as he sat on his bed, the sunlight streaming through his window but doing little to brighten his mood.
"What do I even know about girls?" he muttered to himself, running a hand through his hair in frustration. He wanted it to be special, but he was hitting a wall.
Then, it hit him—a memory of Sienna's laughter floated back to him from a few weeks earlier. They were lounging in the park, and she had talked about her favourite flower, her eyes lighting up. "The Black Dahlia," she'd said, her tone almost reverent. "It's so beautiful and mysterious. I love how unique it is."
A smile crept across Jamie's face. That was it! He could get her something meaningful, something that showed he paid attention. He quickly grabbed his phone and started searching for a Black Dahlia necklace.
After a bit of hunting, he found a simple yet elegant silver pendant in the shape of a Black Dahlia. It was perfect. Not too flashy, but beautiful and unique—just like Sienna.
With a satisfied nod, he ordered it and felt a weight lift from his shoulders. The excitement began to build within him as he imagined Sienna's reaction when she opened the gift.
The day of Sienna's birthday dawned bright and clear. Jamie woke up with butterflies in his stomach, the anticipation electrifying. He arrived at school a little earlier than usual, eager to surprise her.
As the day progressed, he caught glimpses of Sienna, her laughter ringing through the halls, brightening everyone's mood. Jamie couldn't help but smile. She truly was a light in his life.
When lunch rolled around, he found her sitting with her friends, a birthday crown perched on her head, her cheeks flushed with joy. "Happy Birthday, Sienna!" he called out, waving as he approached.
"Thanks, Jamie!" she replied, her eyes sparkling. "I can't believe I'm finally sixteen!"
They spent the lunch hour sharing stories, laughter filling the air as Sienna opened gifts from her friends. Jamie's heart raced with anticipation as he waited for his moment.
Finally, after her friends finished giving their gifts, Jamie took a deep breath, standing up. "Um, Sienna? Can I give you my present now?"
Sienna's expression brightened even more, her curiosity piqued. "Of course!"
He reached into his bag and pulled out the carefully wrapped box. "Happy Birthday!"
Her eyes widened, and a soft smile graced her lips. "You didn't have to get me anything, Jamie."
"I wanted to," he said, trying to sound casual but feeling the nerves bubbling beneath the surface.
With everyone watching, Sienna slowly unwrapped the gift, and when she opened the box, her breath caught in her throat. The Black Dahlia necklace gleamed in the sunlight filtering through the cafeteria windows.
"Jamie, it's beautiful!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine delight. "How did you know?"
"I remember you saying it was your favourite flower," he said, a warmth spreading through him at her reaction. "I thought it'd be special."
Sienna's eyes shone with emotion as she gently took the necklace out of the box. "This is so thoughtful. Thank you so much!" She leaned in, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek, and his heart raced at the gesture.
"Do you want me to help you put it on?" he offered, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.
"Yes, please!" she said, turning around, her hair cascading down her back. Jamie carefully clasped the necklace around her neck, his fingers brushing against her skin. The moment felt electric, and he savoured it.
"Looks perfect," he said, stepping back to admire her.
Sienna turned to face him, her eyes gleaming. "I can't believe how well you know me. This means so much, Jamie."
"I just wanted you to have something special on your birthday," he replied, feeling the warmth of her gaze.
As the lunch bell rang, Jamie felt a sense of accomplishment and joy. They joined her friends, the birthday celebration continuing, but Jamie knew that today would be a memory he cherished forever.
