John B's heart pounded as he walked into Sarah's hospital room. She was still, her eyes closed, a few wires connected to monitors beeping softly in the background. His chest tightened at the sight of her, so vulnerable, but he forced himself to focus. The doctor's words—complications—echoed in his mind. He didn't fully understand what that meant, but it scared him more than anything.

He approached the bed quietly, his eyes tracing the contours of her face. She looked so peaceful, and for a moment, he felt like everything was normal. But then his gaze dropped to her abdomen, and reality hit him again—the baby. Their baby. He had no idea how to even begin processing it all.

As he stood there, she stirred, her eyes fluttering open. When she saw him, a tired smile appeared on her lips. "Hey," she whispered, her voice weak. "Hey," he replied softly, trying to hide the storm of emotions raging inside him. He reached for her hand, stroking it gently.

Sarah's brow furrowed, and she glanced around as if trying to piece together what had happened. "What happened— What did the doctor say?" she asked, her voice tinged with worry. "Am I okay?" John B hesitated for a moment. How was he supposed to tell her about everything without terrifying her? He swallowed hard. "You're stable... but they said there were some complications. They're keeping an eye on you and..." He trailed off, not sure if he should say it. But he had to. She deserved to know. "And the baby."

Sarah froze, her eyes widening in shock. "The baby?" she repeated, her voice barely audible. Panic flickered across her face, but then confusion took over. "How... how do you know about that?" John B gave her a small, sad smile. "Kie told me when you fainted. I guess... I know now."

Sarah stared at him, her lips parting as if she was about to say something, but no words came out. She looked away for a moment, clearly overwhelmed. She couldn't look into his eyes— not right now. "I was going to tell you," she whispered, guilt seeping into her voice. "I just... I didn't know how."

John B nodded, understanding the weight she must have been carrying. "No hey, hey, it's ok, I get it," he said gently. "I do. It's a lot... and I don't know what I'm doing either, but..." He hesitated, searching for the right words. "But I'm here. We're in this together, okay?"

Her eyes filled with tears, and she squeezed his hand tighter. "I'm so terrified," she confessed, her voice shaking. "I didn't think this would happen... and now, with everything going on at the moment, I don't know what's going to happen to us."

John B's chest tightened as he looked down at her, feeling a surge of protectiveness. He leaned closer, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "I don't know what's going to happen either," he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. "But I do know one thing... you, and now our child, mean the world to me. I want this." he whispered. "I want us. I want you, and the baby... and whatever this life brings us. I want to build it with you."

Tears spilled down Sarah's cheeks as she looked up at him, overwhelmed by his words, by his love, by the gravity of their situation. "I don't know what l'd do without you." she choked out, her grip on his hand tightening.

He caressed her soft skin with his thumb as they sat there in the quiet of the hospital room, holding on to each other like they were the only things tethering each other to this world. It didn't matter how scared they were. They were in this together.

A few hours had passed, and the hospital room had quieted. Sarah rested, her breathing steady as the sedatives worked through her system. John B sat by her side the whole time, his mind a whirl of thoughts. The Pogues had left to give them some privacy, but the weight of everything still hung heavy in the air.

John B stared at Sarah's sleeping face, feeling a mixture of awe and responsibility. The reality of becoming a father was sinking in, deeper than before. This wasn't some distant future—they were in it now. His gaze shifted to her abdomen, where their baby was growing, and the enormity of it all hit him again. A new life, a family. He hadn't planned for this. But it was here, and he wanted it more than he'd realized.
