In a sudden outburst, Enoch slammed his hands on the table, silencing the chaos. His glare swept across the table, meeting the curious faces of his friends. "Enough with the damned questions!" he snapped, frustration bubbling over.
The tension in the room thickened, the atmosphere heavy with confusion and surprise. Enoch sighed, rubbing his temples as he felt the emotional waves crashing in the air around him. He noticed the growing concern on the faces of Claire, Bronwyn, Fiona, and Horace—those who were lost in the moment, not yet aware of Adrenna's presence.
Adrenna felt the impact of Enoch's frustration like a gust of wind, but she couldn't help but speak up. "I'm sorry because of me you seemed—"
"Enough with your sorrys!" Enoch interrupted, his voice sharp and exasperated. Adrenna's heart sank at the outburst, and she sensed his anger wasn't entirely directed at her; it was a mix of his own turmoil, frustration, and protectiveness.
"Sorry—" Before she could finish her apology, Enoch's head snapped toward the nearest mirror, searching for a reflection that wouldn't show her but would somehow provide her with the clarity she needed. The move was sudden, and it only confused the other children more. They exchanged glances as if they had just witnessed Enoch sprout another head.
Miss Peregrine, ever the calming presence, broke the tension with her gentle voice. "I'm sorry, dear. Enoch has a bit of a temper," she said, directing her words toward Adrenna with a warm, understanding smile. Everyone turned to her, and she gave Enoch an amused smile that only made him scowl deeper.
The tension slowly dissolves in the face of Miss Peregrine's kindness. Adrenna, still in Enoch's shadow, felt a swell of warmth in her chest despite the awkwardness. Enoch, on the other hand, shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his gray eyes narrowing as he tried to mask his embarrassment.
"Right, yes," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, feeling the weight of their gazes. Adrenna could sense his frustration, but it mingled with something softer—an undercurrent of protectiveness that made her heart flutter.
The atmosphere around the dinner table gradually returned to a semblance of normalcy. The previous tension faded, replaced by the familiar sounds of quiet chatter and the clinking of cutlery. Adrenna remained nestled in Enoch's shadow, though he could feel her fidgeting, a silent testament to her unease.
"What is it?" he asked in his mind, his tone curious but edged with concern.
"I-I... feel bad," she replied softly, her words laced with uncertainty.
Enoch frowned, understanding her sentiment with just those three words. He glanced around the table, noting how the other children were trying to go about their dinner. Their chatter flowed, but their eyes lingered on the empty space next to him, filled with curiosity and a hint of longing to connect. They wanted to see her, to talk to her, to befriend her. But Adrenna stayed hidden, her voice only accessible to him.
"Do you have anywhere to go here?" Enoch probed gently, hoping to draw her out of her shell.
"No," she replied, her voice small and confused. Her thoughts drifted back to her past—the villagers, the circus, her parents—and she wondered why she would ever want to return there. A flicker of sadness washed over her.
"Then they have plenty of time to wait. You're not going anywhere," Enoch stated matter-of-factly, oblivious to the kindness and genuine tone that slipped through his guarded demeanor. The words seemed to hang in the air, providing a small comfort.
As dinner wrapped up and the chatter among the children picked up again, Adrenna couldn't help but join in, though only Enoch could hear her. "They're nice," she said hesitantly, a hint of hope creeping into her voice.
"Yeah, they are," Enoch replied, trying to reassure her. "They're just... curious. It's not every day someone slips into shadows."
"But they might think I'm... s-strange," she murmured, anxiety creeping into her thoughts.
"What make you think that?" Enoch shot back, though his voice was softer than usual. "You're in a mansion filled with chidren who's not normal. Nothing here is not strange." He allowed himself a brief, almost playful smile, his confidence seeping into his words.
Just then, the dinner concluded, and Emma and Oliver sprang into action, helping Miss Peregrine clean up. The other children rushed off to their playtime, laughter echoing through the mansion. Enoch watched them leave, a mix of admiration and envy bubbling inside him.
He stood up, grabbing the clean plate that had been set aside for Adrenna if she ever decided to come out. He filled the plate with the remaining food and filled a tall glass with juice, glancing back to back as his hand lingered over each food, completely unaware of the three women watching him.
As he stood there, balancing the plate and glass, he shot an annoyed look at the empty chair beside him. "I'm not carrying anymore plates than one." he muttered under his breath, his irritation aimed at Adrenna but to anyone's else eyes it was at no one in particular. He didn't even realize he was speaking out loud until Emma and Oliver exchanged amused glances, clearly hearing him.
With that, he walked away, heading back to his room, feeling Adrenna trail closely behind him. Her excitement bubbled within him, a stark contrast to the earlier tension, as she anticipated finally getting some food. "You really d-didn't have to do that, but t-thank you." she said, her voice almost a whisper, yet filled with gratitude.
Enoch replied, shrugging off the compliment. "You need to eat. You can't just hide in shadows all the time."
"Y-You're right," she conceded.
Meanwhile, in the dining room, Emma turned to Miss Peregrine, a glimmer of surprise in her eyes. "I never thought the loop would live long enough to see that."
Olive chuckled, her voice warm with amusement. "I think it's adorable! Maybe this friend will finally get him out of his broody room for once."
Miss Peregrine smiled, her gaze thoughtful. "Indeed, it seems we might have a new member in our little family. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds." Her mind churned with possibilities, the future of their group—a Ymbryne's responsibility—felt just a bit brighter with Adrenna's presence, a small light illuminating the shadows that had once surrounded them all.
