We danced later than we meant to,
High on walks and wine and what-ifs,
Magic and mischief glinting in your eyes
While the candlelight flickered low
And I played the old, familiar tunes.
'I hold on to your whole body,' we sung,
Crying hard with laughter,
Each move you make one more
Familiar tender press and comfort.
And, secretly, we both shed real tears
For those simple, ordinary things,
Stolen from us - once upon a time -
In a green field in the spring sunshine.
