A few days later, we all met up for the picnic: Alan, Aiden, Xavier, Jules, Sasha, Nathan, Daniel, Abby, James, Aaron, Riley, and me. The weather was perfect, with the sun shining as we spread out blankets in the park. Everyone was in good spirits, laughing and joking as we shared snacks and drinks. For a moment, it felt like things might finally go back to normal.

But I couldn't shake the weird vibe between Sasha and Daniel. They sat close, laughing and talking, while Nathan watched them from across the blanket. His usual smile had faded, and I could tell something was bothering him.

As the day went on, the group broke into smaller conversations. Alan, Aiden, Xavier, Jules, Aaron, and Riley got caught up in a Frisbee game, their laughter and shouts filling the park. The rest of us stayed behind, chatting. I found myself sitting next to James, and at first, it was awkward, but soon we started joking like old times. The tension between us started to fade, though the memory of our recent argument still lingered.

Then, out of nowhere, Sasha stood up, pulling Daniel along with her. "We're going for a walk," she said, not even looking at Nathan. I saw his face drop as they wandered off together. Abby, sitting nearby, noticed too. She leaned toward Nathan and gently suggested, "Hey, let's grab some ice cream."

Nathan hesitated, clearly upset, but then he nodded and followed Abby to the ice cream truck. I watched them go, feeling for him. It wasn't just about Sasha and Daniel; it was the way everything seemed to be shifting lately.

I glanced at James, and he gave me a soft smile. "You're not imagining it," he said, his voice low. "They've been like that all day."

I sighed. "I don't care," I lied, trying to sound unaffected.

James gave me a knowing look. "Sure you don't."

I was about to reply when he surprised me by saying, "I'm sorry, by the way. About what I said before." He hesitated, then added, "I didn't realize how much it hurt you."

I blinked, caught off guard. "It's okay. I wasn't exactly fair either."

He shook his head. "No, I get it now. I didn't think about how my actions were affecting you. And I shouldn't have brushed it off."

His apology was unexpected, but it felt sincere. I nodded, feeling a bit lighter. "Thanks, James."

We sat in comfortable silence after that, the tension between us finally gone. Across the park, I could see Abby talking softly to Nathan, making him smile. Her kindness seemed to lift his mood a little.

As the day went on, the four of us—Abby, Nathan, James, and I—ended up hanging out together. The pain from earlier slowly faded, and I could see that Abby's presence was helping Nathan move on from Sasha. Meanwhile, being around James again felt different, easier, like we were finally seeing eye to eye.

By the time the sun began to set, the awkwardness had disappeared. Abby had helped Nathan start to heal, and James... well, he helped me realize that sometimes, it's okay to let go of the past.

As we packed up to leave, I couldn't help but notice the new connections forming between us. There was an undeniable chemistry—between Abby and Nathan, and maybe even between James and me. Something had shifted, and it felt like a new chapter was just beginning for all of us.
