The party continued in full swing as everyone hugged and exchanged warm New Year's wishes. Daniel still had my hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze as he led me through the crowd. I caught sight of Ayla and Aiden, laughing together over something silly, while Sasha was dragging Riley and Aaron into a group photo, insisting on capturing the moment even though Aaron pretended to protest.

As I moved through the crowd, I felt a nudge on my shoulder. It was Adam, grinning as he held up two cups. "Soph, Happy New Year! Cheers to fresh starts, right?" He handed me one, and we clinked cups, laughing. There was something so easy and comfortable about Adam, his friendship a recent but refreshing addition to my life. His presence was a reminder that the new year could bring more than just complicated feelings; it could also bring new beginnings and new people who made things lighter.

"Happy New Year, Adam! Here's to the best year yet." I smiled, and as we chatted, Allie joined us with Alan in tow, pulling me into a hug so strong it nearly made me spill my drink.

"Sophie! You survived another year of us!" she laughed, beaming. "I have a good feeling about this one. Can you believe we're almost adults?" Her words struck me as both exhilarating and a little scary.

Alan chuckled, giving me a playful tap on the shoulder. "You guys make this sound like we're off to war or something. It's just a new year." But then he gave me a serious look, softened by a small smile. "I'm glad we're all still together, though. Let's keep it that way."

I nodded, feeling a wave of gratitude for my friends and all we'd been through. As we stood together, Daniel came up beside me again, his arm brushing against mine. There was a warmth in his eyes, and for a moment, I thought about how nice it was to have someone steady, someone who didn't make me second-guess every glance or touch.

Then, out of nowhere, I felt James's gaze on me again. He was standing a few feet away, watching me with an intensity I couldn't quite read. Ayla was beside him, her arm looped through his, laughing at something Allie had said. But James's eyes didn't leave mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to fade out, leaving just the two of us in a silent exchange of unsaid words.

Adam, noticing the direction of my gaze, gave me a gentle nudge. "James, huh? Thought he'd be busy with Ayla tonight," he said, his voice low and teasing, but with a flicker of understanding.

I felt my cheeks heat up and quickly turned to change the subject, pulling Adam and the others into a group selfie, hoping to shake off the lingering tension. "Come on, all of us, New Year's memory!" We laughed and posed, trying to fit everyone into the frame, and for a moment, it felt like all the complicated feelings melted into pure happiness.

But as I looked at the photo afterward, I noticed how James's eyes still seemed to find their way to mine, even through the camera lens.

Later, as I was stepping outside to get a bit of fresh air, Daniel followed me, slipping his hand around mine as we leaned against the railing. The night air was crisp, and we could still hear the hum of music and laughter from inside.

"So, Sophie, what's your big resolution this year?" he asked, his voice soft and genuine.

I paused, thinking. "Maybe... to figure out what I want," I admitted, glancing up at the stars. "To stop letting myself get so torn between things, you know?"

Daniel nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I get that. Maybe this year will make things clearer."

We stood there for a moment, watching the lights twinkle across the city. It felt right, easy, being here with him, but something in me was still restless.

Just then, James stepped out onto the balcony, his gaze catching ours. He stopped, hesitating, as if he were intruding, and a part of me felt the familiar tension tighten between us. Daniel noticed and gave my hand one last squeeze before letting go.

"I'll give you two a minute," he said, his voice warm but understanding. He gave James a quick nod as he walked back inside.

James took a deep breath and walked over to stand beside me. "Hey," he said quietly, his voice softer than I'd heard it all night.

"Hey," I replied, feeling that nervous flutter return.

He looked at me, and I could see a hint of vulnerability in his eyes. "Sophie... I know things have been complicated between us. And I don't want to make this year harder for you. But... I can't pretend like I don't care. You mean a lot to me, even if it's not always clear how."

I felt my heart beat faster, and before I could stop myself, I reached up to touch his hand, a small, comforting gesture that surprised even me. "James, I... I don't know what this year will hold. But I don't want us to lose each other, even if things stay complicated."

He smiled, a little sadly, but his eyes held a promise. "Then let's figure it out together. Even if it's messy."

Just then, the door burst open, and Allie, Alan, and Adam appeared, laughing as they called us back inside for one last song. I glanced at James, giving him a small nod, and we followed them in, blending back into the warmth and chaos of our friends.

As I danced with the group, surrounded by laughter and friendship, I felt both the excitement and uncertainty of the year ahead. For now, I knew one thing—I had my friends, my memories, and whatever came next, I'd face it with them by my side.
