"Well, look at you!" Leila said. She'd just come home from work and Nova ran to greet her.

It was only eight in the morning, but Nova was already in her Halloween get-up - a light blue mermaid costume with a floral headpiece.

"It's Halloween!"

"Yes, it is. And it looks like you're all ready. Is Kimberly still asleep?"

"Yes. Can you wake her up? We have to go soon."

Leila chuckled, "Don't worry. You still have a few hours. Come on, let's surprise her with breakfast."

"Okay." Nova did a joyful twirl before heading to the kitchen.

Since bringing Nova home, Leila and Kimberly had seen her happy plenty of times, but this was another level. Little Nova talked throughout breakfast, asking endless questions about this afternoon's Halloween party and tonight's trick or treating.

"All right," Leila said as breakfast ended, "I'm going to sleep. Nova, have fun at the party. I'll see you later."

Nova nodded with an enthusiastic smile.

Leila chuckled, patted Nova's head, and said goodbye to Kimberly.

Nova turned to Kimberly after Leila left and asked for the fifth time, "Is it time yet?"

"Almost, honey. Why don't you go play and I'll tell you when it's time to go pick up Emily?"

"Emily!" Ashleigh called. "Miss Kimberly is going to be here any minute!"

Little feet carrying a girl in a Minnie Mouse costume ran into the living room to Ashleigh, who was waiting at the front door.

"Are you sure those shoes are okay?" Ashleigh asked her daughter.

"Yes."

"They're fine, Ashleigh," Beth said, entering the room behind Emily. "I told you, they're only designed to look big. They fit her perfectly."

"Okay. Are you going to be good for Miss Kimberly and the other teachers?"

"Mama, I'm always a good girl."

Ashleigh laughed at that. "You got me there, huh?"

"Yes, she does," Beth told Ashleigh. "All right, Minnie, up against the wall for your very first Halloween picture."
