The air was thick with tension as Min-woo stared down the barrel of Seok-jin’s gun, his heart pounding in his chest. Time seemed to stretch endlessly as he processed the danger they were in. Around him, he felt Soo-jin and Mia hold their breath, fear palpable in the confined space of the SUV.
“Put down the weapon, Seok-jin!” Captain Lee shouted, raising his own gun and aiming it directly at Seok-jin. The standoff intensified, a stifling silence enveloping the scene.
“Why should I?” Seok-jin sneered, his grip on the gun steady. “You’re the ones who’ve made a mess of everything. Jae-hyun should have known better than to dig where he didn’t belong.”
“Let her go, Seok-jin!” Min-woo shouted, his voice fierce. “This isn’t about Jae-hyun anymore. You don’t have to do this!”
Seok-jin’s eyes glinted with malice. “You think you can reason with me? You’ve lost. You always were the weak link, Min-woo. Look where your so-called friends have led you.”
“Enough talk!” Captain Lee ordered, shifting his weight as if preparing to fire.
In that moment, the air grew heavy with unspoken threats. Min-woo felt a surge of determination. “You’re wrong about me, Seok-jin. I’m not afraid of you or your games. We’re here for the truth. You’re just a coward hiding behind a gun.”
Seok-jin’s expression flickered, momentarily taken aback by Min-woo’s defiance. “Coward? You have no idea what I’ve done to get here.” His finger tightened on the trigger.
Before Seok-jin could react, a sudden sound shattered the standoff: the unmistakable wail of sirens echoed in the distance, drawing closer by the second.
Seok-jin’s eyes darted to the road behind them, and in that moment of distraction, Min-woo lunged forward, his instincts kicking in. He grabbed Seok-jin’s wrist, forcing the gun away as it discharged, the bullet ricocheting harmlessly into the ground.
“Get out! Now!” Min-woo shouted, shoving Seok-jin away just as Captain Lee fired a warning shot into the air, commanding control of the situation.
In the chaos, the SUV doors flung open, and Min-woo propelled Mia and Soo-jin out of the vehicle, shouting for them to run toward the safety of the approaching sirens.
As they scrambled to escape, Seok-jin regained his footing, rage twisting his features. “You think you can get away? You’re nothing without the evidence!”
“Run!” Captain Lee yelled, firing another shot at the ground to keep Seok-jin at bay.
They sprinted towards the police cars that had just rounded the corner, blue and red lights flashing, illuminating the scene with urgency. Officers poured out, weapons drawn, ready to assist.
“Over here!” one of the officers called, waving them toward the safety of the squad cars.
Min-woo and the others dove behind the vehicles as Seok-jin’s men emerged from their SUV, guns blazing.
“Get down!” an officer shouted as they returned fire, the air crackling with gunfire and shouts.
“Min-woo!” Soo-jin yelled, pulling him to the side. “We need to get that flash drive to the precinct. It’s the only thing that can help us take him down!”
“I know,” he replied, glancing at the chaos unfolding. The officers were engaged in a tense firefight with Seok-jin’s men, but they were outnumbered. They needed a plan.
“Where’s Mia?” Soo-jin shouted, panic creeping into her voice.
Min-woo quickly scanned the area, his heart racing. “I don’t see her!”
