The sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the narrow road as Harry and Eva made their way to 364 Alfred Street, the home of Oscar and Minnie Bartels. The newlyweds exchanged excited glances, grateful to be welcomed into the neighborhood by such a kind and familiar couple. The rhythmic sound of their footsteps on the pavement echoed the newness of their journey together - a journey made all the more reassuring by the presence of Oscar and Minnie.

As they approached the charming light grey house, they noticed the cheerful garden overflowing with blooming flowers, a testament to Minnie's green thumb. The white railings and dark grey trim framed the entrance like an invitation, making it impossible to resist stepping inside. Harry reached for the doorknob, and before he could knock, the door swung open.

"Mrs. Bartel!" Eva exclaimed, her face lighting up as she hugged her neighbor tightly. "It's so good to see you!"

"Welcome, welcome!" Minnie beamed, her blue eyes sparkling with warmth. "I've been looking forward to this visit ever Oscar told me that you purchased the house just down the road. The timing couldn't have been better when our neighbors put it for sale. Come in, come in!"

Harry stepped inside, taking in the cozy interior filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked bread and the soft glow of lamps casting a warm light. The living room was filled with quaint furnishings, each piece telling a story of love and history, much like the couple who owned them.

"Your home is lovely, Mrs. Bartel," Harry complimented, removing his hat as he entered. "It feels so warm and inviting."

"Thank you, Dear!" Minnie replied, waving a hand dismissively. "It's nothing fancy, but we've made it our own. Now, let me take your coats." She led them to a small coat rack by the door, deftly hanging their outer garments before ushering them into the heart of the home.

As they settled into the plush armchairs, Oscar emerged from the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel. "Ah, the newlyweds!" he exclaimed with a broad smile. "It's wonderful to see you both. How are you finding life on Alfred Street?"

"We love it so far," Harry said, glancing at Eva, who nodded enthusiastically.

"That's good to hear!" Oscar replied, his demeanor cheerful and welcoming. "Minnie and I have lived here for many years now, and we take pride in looking out for our neighbors."

Minnie chimed in, her hands clasped in her lap. "And we're so happy to have you both here. You know, it's not just about being neighbors; it's about building a community. You'll fit in just fine, I'm sure, and before you know it, your little ones will be playing alongside our grandchildren when the come to visit."

Harry and Eva exchanged glances, a blush kissing Eva's cheeks.

As they settled deeper into conversation, Minnie brought out a tray laden with her freshly baked cookies and steaming cups of tea. The rich aroma filled the room, wrapping them in comfort.

"I thought we could have a little treat while we chat," she said, placing the tray on the coffee table.

"Thank you, Mrs. Bartel. These look amazing," Eva said, reaching for a cookie. The first bite melted in her mouth, and she closed her eyes in bliss. "These are delicious!"

"I'm glad you like them," Minnie said, pride lighting her features. "Baking is one of my favorite pastimes. It's a way for me to share my love with others."

As they continued to share stories, laughter filled the room, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie that enveloped them like a warm blanket. They spoke of their lives, the journey that brought Harry and Eva together, and the joys and challenges of marriage. Oscar shared tales from his time as a collector for the city, and Minnie recounted funny anecdotes from their years of marriage, often leading to Harry and Eva laughing heartily.

Eventually, the conversation turned to community matters. Lanecea's name came up, and Minnie's expression shifted to one of fondness. "Lanecea is such a remarkable woman. She has a gift for bringing people together. I'm sure you'll get to know her well while she is in town," Minnie remarked.

Harry and Eva nodded in agreement, sharing their own impressions of Lanecea. "I haven't had the opportunity to meet her personally, but I did enjoy Ulrick's sermon last Sunday," Harry admitted. "I'm sure Pastor Lemon feels lucky to have them in town."

"Yes," Eva added, her voice warm. "It's only idle gossip, I'm sure, but I've heard that she has some big plans for our street."

Oscar chuckled softly. "You can bet on that! We've known Lanecea for some time although she often leaves for some time. That woman has a knack for making connections. I suspect she'll soon have you involved in her projects. Take the time to get to know her and Ulrick - you won't regret it, I'm certain."

As the evening wore on, the sun finally dipped below the horizon, and the warm glow of lamps cast a comforting light in the room. The conversation flowed easily, and although Evan had known the couple who had attended her church for years, it felt different now that they were neighbours. The warmth and kindness radiating from the couple made them feel welcomed and secure in their new home.

Before long, it was time for Harry and Eva to return to their own house. They stood at the door, feeling a sense of contentment wash over them.

"Thank you for a lovely evening," Harry said, shaking Oscar's hand. "We're truly grateful to have you as neighbors."

"Anytime," Minnie added, her voice filled with sincerity. "You're always welcome here. We look forward to seeing you both at church!"

As they walked back down Alfred Street, hand in hand, Eva sighed contentedly. "I'm so glad we moved here. I can already tell we're going to make wonderful friends."

"Absolutely," Harry agreed, his heart full. "This is just the beginning."

Together, they turned toward their new home, the excitement of their future shimmering in the cool night air, knowing they had found not just neighbors but a community that felt like family.
