Chapter Two

September 1st ,1995

September first rolled around rather quickly. Evy spent the remainder of the summer enjoying the company of the muggle neighbor kids. She wasn't the best of friends with them, but she did like to ride bikes around the town with them, enjoying the short-lived sun and blue skies. The kids didn't know anything about Hogwarts or the wizarding world, as it should be. They all thought that Evy went to some boarding school somewhere.

So, that morning, Evy was awoken at around 7:45 in the morning. She got dressed into the white collared shirt and black skirt she had to wear for school. She double checked that all her belongings were packed in her trunk. When she was sure, she drifted downstairs for breakfast. Her fathers were already downstairs. She took a piece of toast off the blue plate by the stove and sat down on one of the coffee brown barstools that lined the raised island. She began to eat, knowing how much she was going to miss her own home over the school year.

There was very little light illuminating the kitchen. Only the light from under the cupboards and the chandelier over the circular table a few paces behind the counter put the room into light. Her family didn't like to use artificial lighting often. They normally just let the sunshine in, giving most rooms some degree of sunny warmth. The auburn-haired girl loved the sun more than anything else. Sunny days were the best, with their welcoming warmth, the energy they brought, the wild freeing sense of pure joy and carefreeness. What a shame it was coming to an end.

"Get your trunk so we can leave. Don't want to be late," her dad prompted.

Evy headed back upstairs to get her things, checking again if she packed all her things. Her toothbrush, her textbooks, her sketchbook (she loved to draw), her wand, of course, her potions kit... yes, everything was there. She was sure this time. Except, did she see her Hufflepuff jumper anywhere? Yes, she had, it was packed like everything else she needed. After spending five minutes double and triple checking her trunk, she fastened it up and lugged it down the carpeted stairs of her home. After another three or four minutes, she managed to get it down the stairs, out the front door and to the car boot.

"We're late! C'mon" her dad urged, half pushing them into the car.

"Jesus, Aiden," her pa exclaimed, "Calm down, it'll be fine."

Evy's dad shot her pa a sharp look before he got them all in the car with her pa at the wheel. The car started up and rolled out of the driveway on its way to Kings Cross station.

After about 30 minutes, Evy started to feel sick. Her stomach was doing aerobics, causing her to feel queasy. "Pa, can we pull over? I feel sick."

"Try to hold on, Evy, we're running late," her dad responded instead.

"I don't think I can. I' m gonna throw up..." she trailed off.

"I- fine," her dad  gave in, "We'll stop at the gas station coming up. But try not to take too long, we can't risk being late."

In about five minutes, the car was parked out in the lot in front of the run-down gas station and Evy was in the women's room, her stomach releasing the pent-up fury it had. The bile burned her throat like cold air burns lungs when running on a winter's day. She felt the headache that she had melt away. She was crouched over the toilet for no more than three minutes when she started to felt better.

She rejoined her dads who were browsing the store shelves, their eyes glazing over the packaged foods and bottled sodas without truly seeing. They looked up at her when she came out and began to walk with more purpose.
