Chapter 3

Emery Murphy, Age 23

Present Day

Boston, MA

I stare between the beige blouse and the off-white blouse.

An important decision.

I land on the beige one. Less of a risk for spills I am so prone to. I pull the silky fabric over my head and tuck them into my stylish slacks. Looking in the mirror, I let out a long, shaky breath. I arrange and re-arrange the top of my dresser. Whenever I get stressed, my obsessive tendencies come out more.

Once everything is arranged in an acceptable manner, I take a step back.

"You are a strong, capable woman, Emery Ann Murphy," I tell myself as I stare at my reflection in the mirror.

Today is my first day working with my dad in an official capacity. After graduating from Hurth U with my business degree, I moved to New York City for a year to intern at one of the top investment firms in the city.

But now it was time to get back to my roots – to start doing the work I've always longed to do.

My father, Finn Murphy, is one of the most powerful men not only in Boston, but in the country. He's got a conglomerate of businesses under Murphy Inc., a business started by my grandfather and built up to what it is today by my father.

Like my father, I hope to have success in this world. I know I can do it. I know I have the brain and the capabilities. I am not the shy, awkward teenage girl I was when I left this city.

I'm back, and I'm ready for anything.

There's a light rap at the door of my bedroom.

"Come in!" I call.

"Good morning, Emmy!" Mom's voice coos.

Kailey Murphy, the picture of beauty, grace, and charm, steps into my room and folds me into her arms. She squeezes me affectionately.

"I cannot believe my baby is all grown up," she sniffles.

"Mom," I laugh, playfully shoving away from her.

I still live with my parents. For security purposes. We're kind of a full house right now. My older brother, Noah, has a room here. He stays in the city a lot, but due to always being at the right-hand of Dad, he's often home too. Then there's my younger sister, Bridget. She's home for the time-being from her stint modeling and traveling around Europe. Then of course there's my youngest brother, Ryder, who is 17 and still obviously in high school.

I look around my room that hasn't been updated since I was 12.

Yep. I definitely feel like I stepped back in time.

I don't mind it though.

I love my family. My parents have always been supportive of each and every one of our dreams. Both Mom and Dad are wildly ambitious, never settling, and always looking to do more in life. Mom built up her fashion boutique into a chain of designer clothes and she shows no sign of slowing. I admire both her and my father. I think me and each of my siblings have taken on variations of this life perspective.
