The sun continued its relentless ascent in the sky, casting its bright light over the palace gardens, which bloomed with vibrant colors and fragrant blossoms. For most, the garden was a paradise, a place to enjoy the beauty of nature and the warmth of the day. For Fourth Nattawat, however, it felt like a cage—too bright, too open, and filled with distractions he couldn’t afford.
As he walked along the meticulously arranged paths, he could feel Gemini trailing behind him, the young man’s presence both comforting and annoying. Despite Fourth’s earlier dismissal, he found himself acutely aware of Gemini’s every move. It was infuriating how the simple act of someone being near could stir a restlessness inside him.
“Your Highness,” Gemini said, his voice cheerful and light, breaking the silence that hung between them like a heavy veil. “Is there anything specific you’d like me to do today?”
Fourth turned his head slightly, narrowing his eyes at Gemini. “You could start by learning to keep quiet,” he replied, his tone sharp. “A eunuch should know when to speak and when to observe.”
Gemini didn’t flinch. Instead, he offered a bright smile, unbothered by Fourth’s irritation. “Understood, but I think it’s important to know what my duties are. If I’m to serve you, I should know your preferences.”
For a moment, Fourth was struck by the audacity of Gemini’s words. Most people trembled at the thought of questioning him. But there was something in Gemini’s eyes—a spark of determination—that made it impossible for Fourth to dismiss him completely.
“Fine,” Fourth said, begrudgingly. “You can help with the arrangements for tonight’s dinner. We’re expecting guests from neighboring kingdoms, and I expect everything to be perfect.”
“Of course, Your Highness,” Gemini replied, a hint of excitement lighting up his features. “I’ll make sure everything is ready.”
As they continued through the garden, Fourth tried to focus on the tasks ahead. Yet, he found himself drawn to the way Gemini moved—his light steps, the way he paused to admire a blooming flower or interact with the other servants. The contrast was stark; where Fourth was all sharp angles and cold demeanor, Gemini was a fluid warmth, easily blending with the world around him.
“Do you always work this hard?” Fourth asked suddenly, catching himself off guard. “What drives you?”
Gemini paused, his expression thoughtful. “I’ve learned that nothing comes easy in life,” he said earnestly. “I’ve had to work for everything I have. I want to prove that I can succeed, no matter where I come from. And I want to make my family proud.”
“Pride is a luxury,” Fourth replied, his voice devoid of emotion. “What happens when you fail? What then?”
Gemini’s smile faltered for a brief moment, but he quickly recovered. “Failure is part of learning. It’s how I’ve gotten to where I am today. I refuse to let fear hold me back.”
For a split second, Fourth felt something shift within him—an unexpected sense of admiration. Here was someone who faced the world head-on, unafraid of its challenges. It was foreign to him, yet oddly refreshing. But before he could dwell on it, he shook his head, banishing the thought.
“Stay focused on your tasks,” Fourth commanded, his voice returning to its usual icy tone. “You’ll need to ensure the dining hall is prepared for the guests. The last thing I want is for you to make a fool of yourself in front of them.”
“Yes, Your Highness,” Gemini replied, unfazed by the prince’s sharpness. “I’ll do my best.”
