Your suspicion first began when Miko stopped asking for rides home. Having neglectful host parents, she would have you come over to her school to drive her home in your rundown pickup.
Then all of the sudden, she no longer needed rides to her home. Instead, she was picked up in a bulky green car every day now, with little to no warning or explanation as to who was taking her.
So here you were, fingers prancing across the screen of your phone as you sat perched on the concrete rise of the school front yard, ankles lazily crossed with legs dangling over the ledge.
Eyes flicking, you carefully eyed the clock on your phone, counting down the seconds till the ear-bleeding screech of the final school bell rang, and children began to flood out of the doors.
As Miko came rushing out, two young boys followed her. The first was a rugged-looking black-haired boy with clothes almost as bad as your own. And then a short, fluff-haired kid with rectangular spectacles rested crookedly on his nose bridge, a laptop in hand.
"Hey Miko!" you called, holding a cupped hand to your mouth, catching the punk girls' attention. "I got your scrap!"
Miko beamed, her hands balling up by her sides in excitement. She rushed over to you, giving a fist bump greeting, and looking over to the sagging bag that lay limp by your side, eager to search through its contents.
"Quite the finds you got here, N/n," she chirped, blinking up at you appreciatively, nodding as you took the bag straps by her hands.
You hummed lazily in reply, foot bouncing lightly in thought as you glanced over to the two boys that hovered nearby, quiet amongst each other, almost looking intimidated by your presence.
Which was hilarious to you.
"I can only hope you'll find something of use in there for your... robot club," you spoke, making sure your voice was dripping with skepticism towards Miko and her obvious lie.
But of course, she didn't seem to catch on as she ransacked your bag, looking almost disappointed as she pulled out spare car parts, and simple worn-down tools and other such trinkets.
You watched cautiously, eyes glossing over her movements, then to her ride. There it sat, the green, bulky green car, sitting idly, engine off, but having a presence lingering around it that made your eyes narrowed.
Huffing, you jumped off of the concrete fence, arms crossed as you looked to Miko, then over to the green vehicle.
"New ride, hm?" you prompted, gesturing over to it as you spoke to Miko, eyes flicking from her to the strange car you had found yourself enthralled by, there was just something suspicious about it.
Miko paused, a nervous glance tossed over to her two friends, before she replied.
"Yeah! My host parents weren't using this one, so I just decided to use it," she explained, voice straining a bit, and your eyes narrowed.
But- you decided to drop it. Miko fully took the bag, slinging the strap over her shoulder, and began to retreat back with her friends who muttered quietly to themselves, most likely about you.
"Sorry N/n but I uh- gotta go!" she urged, jerking a thumb to her ride, and you stopped slowly following her.
You paused, almost feeling worried. But still, it wasn't your business, and unless you knew she was in imminent danger you needed to mind yourself.
"Very well, I get it," you joked, nudging her lightly with your elbow to her side. "It's cringe to hang out with grown ups, see ya later Miko!"
You got a cheery wave in return.
