The living room of the dorm was alive with laughter, the echoes of their earlier SKZ Code shoot still filling the air. Each of them wore the remnants of a grin, cheeks sore and eyes bright, happiness practically spilling over. Seungmin's cheeks still ached from laughing, his phone now a welcomed distraction as he settled back into his spot beside Minho and Chan.
But the moment he unlocked it, everything shifted. His smile wavered, his eyes freezing on a message notification. Then his lower lip began to quiver.
A small, trembling gasp escaped his lips. Then came a quiet, fractured cry. The sound cut through the air, turning all heads towards him. Seungmin's breath hitched, his shoulders shaking as he let out a broken, silent cry. The laughter died down, each member turning to him, their expressions melting into concern.
"Seungmin?" Chan's voice was soft, coaxing, his hand hovering just beside Seungmin as he tried to catch his eye.
But Seungmin didn't respond. He kept staring at the same spot on his screen, the intensity of his cries quickly escalating. His hand slackened and his phone slipped from his fingers, landing with a dull thud on the floor. A message notification was visible, but none of them could read it as the screen went black after the impact. And then it happened— Seungmin's cries turned into heart-wrenching sobs, the kind that shook him to his core.
The sound shattered the room, and every single member tensed, a collective shock tightening their expressions.
Seated beside him, Minho was the first to react, instinctively reaching out and pulling Seungmin into his chest. "Hey... Seungmin, what happened?" he asked, his voice low, fingers combing gently through Seungmin's hair in an attempt to soothe him. He glanced at the others, confusion etched in his gaze, his own worry mounting by the second.
Seungmin clung to Minho, his hands fisting the fabric of Minho's shirt, his face buried as he continued to cry— loud, gasping sobs that sounded like they were tearing him apart. The pain in his voice was raw, and it only seemed to grow, his shoulders shaking under Minho's gentle hold.
Chan, seated on his other side, reached out as well, his hand rubbing small, slow circles on Seungmin's back, hoping the motion would help ground him. "Seungmin, we're here. It's okay..." Chan murmured, voice soft and soothing. He had said that out of habit, just like he always did whenever any of the members were distressed, but how could he tell if it was really okay if he never knew what had happened in the first place. Even after Chan's tries to comfort him, Seungmin's cries didn't abate; if anything, they grew louder, more anguished. He didn't look up, didn't give any indication that he even heard them. His entire world seemed wrapped up in that grief, raw and consuming.
On the floor in front of him, Hyunjin knelt down, his hand moving to rest on Seungmin's knee, squeezing lightly. "Seungmin-ah... can you tell us what happened?" Hyunjin's voice was barely a whisper, as though speaking too loud might shatter something fragile. His eyes searched Seungmin's face, brows furrowed, but all he received in response was another pained wail as Seungmin buried himself deeper into Minho's hold.
Jeongin and Changbin exchanged worried glances from across the room, both frozen, wide-eyed and unsure. They had never seen Seungmin like this, his emotions so unrestrained, so heartbreakingly raw. Felix moved closer, the warmth of his hand settling on Seungmin's shoulder in a gentle, supportive gesture. He didn't know what to say, his own voice caught in his throat, so he stayed silent, hoping his presence alone would be enough.
