theodore nott had no business being here.
he knew it, she probably knew it, and yet here he was, strolling over to ivelle diggory like a tail wagging eejit.
girls had always thrown themselves at him—smiling, batting eyelashes, twirling hair—and he'd play along, give them a smirk, a lazy wink, knowing none of it mattered. he was good at this game.
but with her? it was different. like the ground was shifting under his feet, and he hated it.
she was sitting on her picnic blanket, surrounded by lovegood, liu, king, and a couple of others, looking like she belonged in a damned painting—hair glowing and those eyes—too damn blue, it made his stomach twist in ways he did not appreciate.
"nott?" her voice was soft, her gaze shifting up to him, all bright and curious, and something inside him tensed up. but he plastered on his usual grin, trying to shake it off.
"a few questions," he said, slipping his hands into his pockets, hoping to sound casual, "for the test tomorrow, you know" her lips curved, like she saw right through his lie, which only irked him more. "didn't we go over that earlier?" she asked, like she genuinely thought he hadn't understood.
"missed a few things," he shrugged, doing his best to play it off. missed you, his mind mocked, and he had to resist rolling his eyes at himself.
she didn't question it, just scooted over and patted the spot next to her. he paused, considering if he could actually sit down without coming off as a total idiot. he wasn't that bad at potions—but that didn't matter. the point was she had him acting like he needed an excuse to be here. that she made him feel... weird.
he sat down, careful not to get too close, while she began explaining the potion.
damn it, he thought, biting the inside of his cheek to keep from staring too obviously at her. how was she doing this to him?
"you're awfully quiet," she said suddenly, turning to him with that same soft smile, her eyes glinting with concern. "am i explaining too fast?"
he blinked, caught off guard. "no," he muttered, shaking his head. "i'm just... thinking."
her smile widened a little, but it wasn't mocking. if anything, it made his chest tighten. "well, let me know if you need me to slow down."
