WILD WAVES.
001 | just so you know

EIGHTEEN MONTHS, EIGHTEEN LONG MONTHS since everyone finally floated back ashore.

So much had happened. Rafe Cameron was back, and better than ever apparently. Ward was dead. The pogues were doing pretty good for themselves, for once. Life was finally turning around on the island of Kildare.

Till today, when Louelle Maybank sat holding of a cheap pregnancy test, in her shaky hands. The two pink lines were oh-so prominent. The worried girl didn't even have time to process that she was having a baby, his baby.

Before Pope called a "family meeting."

"Without the live bait, the fisherman won't come— and that's half of our business right there. We have enough profit to cover it, barely. Just barely." Pope said bluntly, looking around at everyone — his eyes hovering over JJ the longest. Lou shifted on the edge of the counter she was perched on, leaning in closer to see what Pope held ever so carefully.

"This is it, the last of our au." The dark-skinned boy shrugged. Confused 'what?'s coming out of everyone's mouths. "The gold, its the period symbol for gold." He replied like any of them actually listened in school. "Why didn't you just say gold?" Louelle questioned with the attitude she always carried, earning a nod from Kie.

"It doesn't matter, this is all our savings. And it's a no-go. This is for property taxes." As her friend spoke so caringly about their newfound money issues, Lou couldn't help the sinking feeling in her stomach. She needed to come into cash, real soon. "We're gonna have to tighten up, which means. No more six hundred dollars in gas."

"That's my job." JJ protested from the other side of the charter. Suddenly everything was up in flames as Pope named everything they had to give up after working so hard to get it. "Hey, guys! If the business starts failing then the sharks start circling. Alright? We don't even know if your dad's coming back." The smart boy said he definitely had a point, but no one wanted to listen.

At the mention of Luke, Lou couldn't help but bite the inside of her cheek. How she hated that man. She couldn't hide the eye roll she let out as JJ mentioned it wasn't his anymore. She drowned out the voices of her friends— no, her family.

All she could think about was them lines.

Unexpectedly, the sound of the glass jar that contained the gold being placed down on the table broke her out of her thoughts. She sat up, licking her lips as she tried to focus, to ignore what she'd just found out. Her doe-eyed look landed on JJ, watching how he looked at the gold like it was a piece of meat.

"Don't do anything stupid," Lou mumbled to her brother as her manicured hand landed on his back before she walked back into the home they'd built. Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, looking at herself from the side. Trying, searching for any bump on her flat stomach.

"Hey, come one we're leavin' Lou" Cleo called from the doorway, her accent heavy. Watching her best friend in the mirror she knew something was up, Lou usually never stopped talking, now an eerie silence filled the bathroom other than the "Okay." The blonde let out after a long deep breath.

_____

"The race starts soon, so get your bets in!" was the first thing Lou heard as she shuffled through the crowds to get to her brother. "Excuse me, I'm sorry." Were words she must've repeated a million times before she stood next to her basically identical brother.

Cleo was doing something to JJ's bike, Lou never understood that stuff. Just let them do their thing. She went to fashionably flip her head to her shoulder, like she always did— but when her head turned she saw two mean eyes staring daggers into her.
