It was a clear night and the moon illuminated the grounds, casting light over Hogwarts. The skies were dotted with gray clouds, providing the stars a place to hide.

James was restless, risking getting detention for a chance to clear his head and get some fresh air. He was tired, exhausted really but couldn't lie awake in bed any longer without losing his mind.

He was headed towards the Forbidden Forest. His steps on the trail were the only noise in the otherwise quiet area. He still felt tense, nervous and like he was being watched.

Little to James know, he was being watched.

Regulus was sitting up in his dorm, unable to fall back asleep. He was looking out the window, seeking comfort in the glow of the moon when he saw a shadowy figure creeping around the grounds below.

When you recognized it was the most troublesome if the marauders, he let out a long sigh. He pulled on a jumper and shoes, rolling the bottom of his pajama pants so they didn't drag in the damp grass.

James heard another set of footsteps just as he started into the forest and stopped in his tracks. The hair on the back of his neck stood up and he tensed, his muscles clenching at his side's.

"James?" Reg asked softly from a few steps away, observing James' rigid demeanor. "What are you doing out here? It's dark...you're going to get in trouble."

James let out a brief sigh of relief, turning around to face Regulus, who was anxiously wringing his hands.

"I couldn't sleep. Why are you up?"

"I wanted to make sure you were okay...You looked upset." Regulus' tone was even but the anxiously fidgeting didn't cease.

"I'm alright Reg, thank you for checking on me. You should go back to bed," James murmured dismissively, turning back around to the forest.

Regulus stepped closer, still cautious and reached up to rest a hand on James' shoulder. James didn't react, looking lost in thought as Regulus slowly moved his thumb, stroking James' back in a relaxing pattern.

"James, we've got to get back..." Regulus trailed off when James' face changed to concern. "James?"

"Did you see that?" James asked, turning towards Regulus suddenly with a panicked look.

"See what?"

"Something just ran from that bush and deeper into the trees," James explained, lowering his voice and leaning towards Regulus.

"I think the forest is just playing tricks on you. Please come back inside. I don't want you to get in trouble."

"No Reg, I saw it. I really saw something-"

"Regardless," Regulus soothed, cutting him off, "we have to head back inside. We aren't going deep into the forest to investigate the paranormal."

"You don't want to be a ghost hunter?"
James asked, a hint of a smile finally crossing his face.

Thankful for James' slight shift in mood, Regulus shifted closer to James, shivering a bit from the cold.

"What if one of the elves are lost? We should check it out," James prodded, budging Regulus with his shoulder.

"Five minutes," Regulus muttered begrudgingly, crossing his arms. "And I want your coat. It's freezing and your jumper is warmer than mine."

James' face lit up and he shrugged his coat off his shoulders. He wrapped it around Regulus, who was cozy enough from the warm smile on James' face, but would certainly not say no to wearing James' clothes.

Regulus clasped James' hand in his as they started down the trail, enclosed by the dark forest and trees. James' shoulders finally slouched as they walked, as Regulus' stiffened, growing more tense the further they walked.

James' penchant for adventure was finally curing his restlessness and he smiled, squeezing Regulus' hand as they walked.

They heard scuttling in the bushes nearby and both boys froze, James stepping infront of Regulus subconsciously.

"It's probably just an animal," Regulus murmured softly, rubbing James' back gently.

"It might need help," James reasoned, edging Regulus on.

It was eerily quiet in the surrounding area, but James' had started chattering on about nothing, filling the silence with bad jokes and stories of hijinks.
