Sunlight poured through the kitchen windows, casting a warm glow over the spacious room where Jordan had her parent's chef set up a breakfast spread for everyone. The smell of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the aroma of pancakes, bacon, and scrambled eggs. It should have been a comfortable, inviting scene, but a thick tension lingered in the air, unnoticed only by the sizzling bacon in the pan.Jordan, ever the gracious host, moved about with a practiced ease, carefully setting plates around the kitchen island. Mary and Rufus sat together, sipping coffee and exchanging quiet, curious glances. But it was Cal who sat stiffly across the island, his gaze focused on the edge of his plate, his expression unreadable. After the morning's discovery of Gianina and Marcus in a rather compromising position, an unspoken awkwardness had settled in the room, its weight felt by everyone.
Cal's hand tightened around his coffee mug as he heard soft footsteps approaching. Gianina and Marcus entered the kitchen, both freshly dressed but visibly tense. Gianina's cheeks flushed as she took in the sight of her friends sitting in silence, all eyes subtly turning to her and Marcus as they entered. They exchanged glances before joining the group, doing their best to ignore the residual tension hanging in the air.
"Good morning, everyone," Gianina offered, trying to sound cheerful as she took a seat beside Mary. Marcus sat beside her, and the two offered grateful smiles to Jordan as she slid plates of eggs and pancakes toward them.
Mary, ever the peacekeeper, gave Gianina a small smile. "Good morning, GG. Jordan went all out for us, so you're in for a treat."
Jordan nodded, gesturing to the plates. "Dig in. Thought we could all use some comfort food after last night."
Marcus thanked her, helping himself to eggs and bacon, but the silence remained thick. Across the table, Cal's gaze was locked on his food, his fork clinking against the plate as he poked at his breakfast. His face was carefully blank, but there was a tension in his posture that Gianina couldn't ignore.
Rufus cleared his throat, breaking the silence with a forced casualness. "So... did everyone sleep well?" He shot Gianina and Marcus a pointed look, the hint of a smirk tugging at his lips as though daring someone to address the elephant in the room.
Gianina felt her cheeks warm as she forced a smile, trying to brush off the attention. "Um... yeah, actually. Thanks."
Rufus raised an eyebrow, the smirk growing as he leaned back in his chair. "Good to know."
Jordan quickly shot him a look, shaking her head. "Not now, Rufus."
But Rufus only shrugged, clearly entertained by the tension. "What? Just trying to break the silence here."
Mary gave Rufus a warning look, then turned back to Gianina with a warm smile. "I'm glad you're both here. We were just... a little worried when we didn't see you two this morning."
Gianina managed a grateful smile in return, though she couldn't ignore the weight of Cal's silence across from her. Every so often, she caught him glancing up, his gaze flickering from her to Marcus with a mix of frustration and something else—something she couldn't quite read. The memory of his reaction earlier that morning, the disappointed look in his eyes, played in her mind, making her stomach twist uncomfortably.
After a moment, Cal let out a slow sigh, finally looking up from his plate. "Look, I get it. Last night was a lot. But disappearing like that without saying anything?" His tone was even, but there was an edge to his voice. "We're all supposed to be looking out for each other."
Marcus's jaw tightened, his hand instinctively finding Gianina's under the table. "Cal, we didn't go far. We were still in the house. It's not like we left anyone in danger."
Cal's gaze hardened, his voice growing sharper. "That's not the point, Marcus. The point is that you just left without thinking about how it would affect the rest of us."
Jordan, sensing the growing tension, placed a gentle hand on Cal's arm. "We're all safe, Cal. That's what matters, right?"
But Cal didn't look at her; his focus was solely on Marcus and Gianina. "It just seems a little... selfish, that's all. Wandering off, disappearing without a word, when the rest of us were here worried about what might have happened."
Gianina felt her stomach sink, the guilt hitting her harder than she expected. "Cal, I'm really sorry," she said softly. "We didn't mean to worry you. It's just... after everything that's happened, we needed space to talk and process."
Cal's gaze flickered briefly to her, a hint of disappointment flashing in his eyes before he looked back down at his plate. "Fine. Just... next time, think about the rest of us."
Marcus's hand tightened around Gianina's, a subtle show of support. "We don't need a lecture, Cal. We're all here dealing with the same things, but everyone handles it differently. We didn't do anything wrong."
Cal clenched his jaw but stayed silent, clearly holding back whatever retort was on the tip of his tongue. The others exchanged awkward glances, each of them feeling the weight of the confrontation.
Rufus, ever the one to cut through the tension, let out a low whistle. "Yikes. Talk about a tense breakfast." He looked around, raising his coffee mug in a half-hearted toast. "Here's to... sticking together, or whatever."
Jordan sighed, shooting him a look. "Not helping, Rufus."
But Rufus just shrugged, taking a sip of his coffee. "Someone's gotta say it. We've all been on edge since last night, and it's better to just get it out."
Mary leaned forward, her voice gentle as she looked between them. "We're all feeling it, okay? But right now, we need each other more than ever. It's hard, I get it, but we're in this together."
Gianina nodded, grateful for Mary's support. "She's right. I get that last night might have worried everyone, but that's why we're here, right? To look out for each other."
Cal gave a slight nod, though his expression remained guarded. "Just... next time, maybe let someone know. We don't need any more surprises."
The group fell silent again, each of them picking at their food as they absorbed the weight of his words. Gianina's heart sank as she sensed the lingering tension between her, Marcus, and Cal. She had never intended to cause a rift within their group, and the last thing she wanted was for Cal to feel left out or hurt.
As they continued eating, she felt Marcus lean closer to her, his voice a low whisper. "You okay?"
She nodded, managing a small smile. "Yeah. Just... wish things didn't have to be this tense."
"Me too," he murmured, squeezing her hand gently. "But we'll get through it."
Cal's gaze flickered toward them again, catching the quiet exchange, and Gianina saw a flash of something—disappointment, maybe even jealousy—in his eyes. But he quickly looked away, busying himself with his coffee, leaving her feeling a pang of guilt.
Sensing the tension, Jordan clapped her hands together, trying to lighten the mood. "Alright, enough heavy talk. Who's up for a movie marathon or something? There's a ton of Halloween candy around this house. We could use a distraction."
Mary quickly nodded, latching onto the idea. "Yes, please. Something light and fun."
Rufus chuckled, leaning back with a grin. "As long as there's popcorn, I'm in."
The mood slowly shifted as the group agreed on a plan, the tension gradually giving way to a sense of relief as they discussed movies and joked about the choices. Gianina felt a bit of the weight lift as they laughed and chatted, grateful for the small moments of normalcy they could share.
But as breakfast wrapped up and they started clearing plates, Gianina couldn't shake the feeling of Cal's lingering gaze on her. His disappointment hung heavily in the air, an unspoken tension that she knew would need to be addressed sooner or later. But for now, she pushed it aside, determined to make the most of the time they had together and to hold onto the support of her friends.
As they settled in for their movie marathon, she found herself sitting between Marcus and Mary, both of them offering comfort in their quiet, reassuring presence. And for the first time in a long while, Gianina felt a glimmer of hope, a reminder that even in the face of fear and uncertainty, she wasn't alone.
