As Gianina approached the detention center, the weight of uncertainty settled over her. She had spent the night turning over every possible explanation for what the detectives had shown her, her heart aching with disbelief and betrayal. But now, face-to-face with Cal, she would have to confront her doubts, and part of her dreaded what she might find.Just as she reached the visitor's entrance, Detective Williams appeared from a shadowed hallway, a folder clutched in her hand. Her gaze was sharp and watchful as she motioned Gianina to follow her into a small, secluded office.
"Before you see him," Detective Williams began, her tone heavy, "there's something we need you to see."
Gianina's stomach churned as she watched the detective open the folder. Inside, a photograph showed a familiar black suit and a red devil mask—the same haunting costume the killer had worn. But her heart sank further when she noticed the dark, crusted stains of blood on the suit.
"This was found in Cal's locker at school," Detective Williams explained, her voice steady but cold. "An anonymous tip led us to it. And the blood..." She paused, her gaze hardening. "It's a match to Jordan."
Gianina's vision blurred as the weight of the revelation crashed over her. Cal's locker? Jordan's blood? It felt impossible, surreal, like a nightmare she couldn't escape.
"But... no. Cal wouldn't..." She trailed off, her voice trembling as she tried to make sense of it all.
Detective Williams's gaze softened slightly, though her tone remained firm. "Gianina, we know this is hard to hear. But we have to follow the evidence."
Clutching her shaking hands, Gianina took a deep breath, nodding numbly as she walked down the narrow hall toward the visitor's room, each step echoing in the stillness. Her heart felt heavy, her thoughts racing as she tried to find some explanation, some hope that could prove his innocence.
Inside the room, Cal sat alone, his face unreadable as she entered. When he saw her, his expression softened for just a moment before it shifted to something guarded, almost defensive.
Taking a seat across from him, she forced herself to meet his gaze, her voice barely a whisper. "Cal... they found the suit. The mask. In your locker. And they said it had Jordan's blood on it."
Cal's eyes darkened, and he leaned back, studying her with a mixture of disbelief and hurt. "And you believe them? Just like that?"
She swallowed, her voice wavering. "What am I supposed to think? They wouldn't just lie about something like this. It was in your locker, Cal."
His gaze flickered, pain flashing across his face before it hardened again. "So that's it? You're going to throw everything we've been through out the window? Just because they told you to?"
Tears filled her eyes as she tried to hold back the wave of emotions crashing over her. "I don't want to believe it, Cal. But they found the suit. The mask. Jordan's blood. What am I supposed to do with that?"
He looked away, his jaw clenching as he took a deep breath, his voice barely a whisper. "I thought... I thought you were the one person who would believe in me, no matter what. But I guess I was wrong."
The raw hurt in his words tore through her, and she felt her resolve waver, her voice breaking. "Cal, I came here to give you a chance to explain. To hear your side. But you're not even trying to defend yourself."
He laughed, a dark, humorless sound that sent a chill down her spine. "You want an explanation, GG? How about this: maybe I don't owe you one. Maybe you don't deserve it."
The shift in his tone, the sudden edge in his voice, made her stomach twist with unease. "Why are you doing this?" she whispered, her heart aching as she tried to understand the coldness in his gaze.
He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he looked at her, something dark and almost taunting in his expression. "Because, Gianina, you broke my heart. Out of everyone, I loved you the most. And you were the first to turn on me."
Her breath caught, his words striking like a blow to the chest. "Cal... I didn't turn on you. I'm just trying to find the truth."
He tilted his head, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "The truth? You wouldn't know the truth if it stared you in the face." His voice dropped, low and dangerous, as he added, "This story only ends one way."
The words hung in the air, chilling her to the core. She knew that phrase; the killer had whispered it to her, taunting her with the promise of a dark, inevitable end. A sense of dread seeped into her, the pieces of the puzzle beginning to fall into place, each one more horrifying than the last.
Her voice trembled, a mixture of anger and fear. "What did you just say?"
He leaned back, his gaze steady and unyielding, a glint of dark amusement in his eyes. "Oh, come on, GG. You've been dancing around the truth for so long. Maybe it's time you finally face it."
Her hands shook, her voice barely above a whisper. "Cal... you're scaring me."
He smirked, his tone mocking as he watched her. "Good. Maybe it's about time you felt a little fear. After all, you're the one who wanted answers, aren't you?"
Tears spilled down her cheeks, her voice cracking as she struggled to hold back her emotions. "You're not the Cal I knew. The Cal I knew would never hurt people, never lie, never—"
He interrupted her, his voice cold and detached. "Maybe you never knew me at all, GG. Maybe you only saw what you wanted to see."
The realization settled over her like a heavy fog, her heart breaking as she looked at him, seeing the darkness lurking beneath the surface. "Why are you doing this?"
He shrugged, his expression indifferent. "Maybe I just wanted to see how far you'd go to find the truth. To see how easily you'd turn on me."
Gianina's anger flared, her voice rising as she struggled to contain her pain and betrayal. "I trusted you. You were my friend. And now you're just... taunting me?"
His smile widened, a cruel glint in his eyes. "Trust is a funny thing, GG. It doesn't take much to break it."
She stood up, her legs trembling as she backed away from the table, unable to believe the words coming out of his mouth. "You... you're a monster."
Cal's gaze never wavered, his tone soft and taunting as he leaned back in his chair, watching her with a dark satisfaction. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I am. But that doesn't change the fact that you'll always remember me."
Gianina stumbled back, tears streaming down her face as she stared at him, her heart shattered by the person he had become—or maybe the person he'd always been. She had come here hoping for answers, for some small spark of the friend she once knew, but all she found was darkness.
As she turned to leave, his voice stopped her, chilling her to the bone. "Remember, GG... this story only ends one way."
The words echoed in her mind, a sinister promise that left her trembling as she fled the room, her heart heavy with grief and fear, her mind haunted by the man who had once been her closest friend.
