𝗦𝗬𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗘

A small titmouse is perched on the edge of the porch railing. It chirps, pecks at a piece of bread I left earlier, and diligently breaks it into smaller pieces.

I watch this bird for about five minutes – it took twice as long just to notice the bird, crumble the white bread, carefully tiptoe out of the porch, and settle in the kitchen, quietly watching if the little one would come to eat.

While it has breakfast, I grab something to eat for myself. Not having eaten since yesterday afternoon, I should be starving, but I'm not. The stomach cramps, which should cause me unbearable hunger, don't appear, so I take a strawberry-flavored yogurt from the fridge and peel off the packaging.

I slump at the dining table, prop my feet on the chair opposite, and start moving my toes. I dig the spoon into the thick mass, scoop it out, and saver it.

I never thought I would value silence so much, but after fifteen years of constant noise from orphans at the Winchester Orphanage dining hall, I somehow miss it.

I don't know how to live in peace – it's as if my very soul demands chaos.

I sigh, slurping another spoonful, when I hear footsteps echoing upstairs.

I smile to myself, crossing my right leg over my left, and lean back as Clay Davis enters the kitchen. The man is wearing sweatpants and a tight shirt, no shoes. Glancing at my own bare feet, I instinctively brush my brightly painted red toenails.

The layout of this house, especially the kitchen design, is quite odd. The dining table is situated past the doorway to the corridor, so someone entering wouldn't notice anyone sitting at the table.

Perfect, I think, watching the man's eyes, dark with circles beneath them, not even seeing me.

Davis walks into the kitchen and immediately rushes to the kettle. I watch as he takes out a mug, starts pulling coffee packets from the cupboard, and his hand catches on the drawer beside him. Peeling off a silver foil, he tosses a couple of white tablets into his mouth and greedily washes them down with water.
