TW: mention of kinda graphic psychotic episode
A decade of experience in the FBI's witness protection program, eight years in the military, and countless unnamed commendations would train anyone to have ironclad patience. Meticulous, focused, insatiably curious in the realm of duty – this is how my sister would describe me.
She used to pecker me that I'd never find a woman because I was married to my job.
Interestingly, Natalia said these things a good six years ago – but now, though...
I wonder what my sister would say now, considering she has to hide from the world for the very same reason she calls love.
My life has always been fine – even amazing, until one particular dark-haired woman began fraying my nerves. Women never asked for more than I could give – one-night stands and fleeting affairs suited me fine. Even during assignments where I was posted to protect a woman in various parts of the world, I managed to keep my hands to myself.
I don't have time for relationships, so how would this situation make a difference in acting professionally during another operation?
And then, for this operation, Sybille comes into view.
If Sybille Riley was boring, reserved, and didn't throw herself into risky situations, or if she didn't look at me like prey, it would be far easier to maintain control. If I genuinely didn't care about her well-being or her indifference toward the world around her, I would probably leave her alone for the entire three months, but...
I'm drawn to her apathy.
I'm drawn to figure out what's going on with her.
But at the same time, I can't let her youth, her vigor, and those intense dark eyes, whose pupils burn with unhealthy intrigue, compromise my professionalism.
