Chapter Five

~Rebecca

It had been four months since my lady went into seclusion.

A lot had happened during such a short yet daringly long time, Freya a colleague and friend who had served her ladyship along with I and Agnes got married and left the manor, not just her, a few other workers had left the manor.

The life that was within the walls had died along with its master and his family, I feared for my lady, she was barely eating these days and I kept praying for the patches on her skin to not worsen as she had barely left her room, it was painful to watch and I couldn't even blame those who left, we were paid our wages of course but there was no more joy to serving the Kingston anymore. It is not that we could not understand her pain but that we wished she would recover, she is our only master now.

"What's the noise about?" I said as I start my way towards the drawing room, there seems to be a commotion going on there, it took me a while as I was on the second floor. On arrival the sight in front of me filled me with so much fear that before I knew it I was running to my lady's room, she needed to know immediately. There're only so much the knights can do to hold them back before they rip through every last thread that held this manor together.

On reaching my lady's room I could not stop myself from rudely banging on her door, the lady would not be happy with me but it can't be helped

"My lady!" I forced the words through short breaths at first there is no sounds behind the door for a moment I was about to knock on the door louder again but it was roughly pulled open to reveal my lady, she had red eyes and black bags under her eyes, her skin was pale and her once bright auburn hair which was mangled had dulled, she was still wearing her mourning attire from the day she laid her family to rest. The sight of my lady almost brought tears to my eyes before she croaked out her next words angrily

"What is it?!"

"A million apologies my lady but you need to come to the drawing room this instant, there's a guest I'm afraid you can't ignore here" I all but rushed out

"Who?" my lady had cried so much she had lost her voice now she sounded coarse

"It is you father's relatives, Augustine and his family"

There was pin drop silence as my lady's face morphed through different emotions simultaneous to what she was thinking, confusion, annoyance and finally disgust.

"Just because the lion has passed the hyena thinks it can come and overthrow the cub left behind"

Those were the words my lady said before stomping confidently to meet the uninvited guests. There are many secrets the house Kingston kept from the public and one of them was the relationship late Sir Kingston had with his only brother, his brother had always been jealous of him and tried his best to best him, there many instances where Viscount Augustine had tried to interrupt a business late sir Marvin had been working on, tried to siphon money through any means or try to buy the workers. The conflict between the two families were part of the secrets the servants of the house were made to swear silence on and which they had done and any sort of gossip was prevented and as for the viscount's end, he wouldn't want the king to hear that he was giving trouble to his little brother over petty jealousy so he kept quiet, he was wise enough not to anger the king.

And now that Late Sir Marvin was gone their greed had moved them to the doorsteps of their passed brothers' home.

"Well if it isn't my favorite niece, your uncle and aunt had truly missed you, you remember your cousin, don't you?" Viscount Augustine spoke cheerily his wife not hiding the disgust in her expression at my lady's appearance whilst their son had an arrogant smirk on his face, I can't say he had anything to be desired by his looks, it was hard to imagine that he actually had the same makings of the Kingston's, all the Kingston men were attractive even Late Sir Marvin's elder brother was a dashing aged man with his blond wife who was truly beautiful, no one understood why he was lesser in looks

"What are you doing here? I gave an order I closed the gates of the Kingston's manor to anyone" my lady not caring for the etiquette she had mastered spoke angrily to the imposters

"That isn't the way to speak to your family dear niece, but if you must know, the king, your guardian and godfather got worried about you since no words were heard from you and he couldn't continue hearing the same reports from Thomas, so he sent us to check on you" his fake smile was so sickly, it turned my stomach in a kind of way I really did not like

"Well I truly appreciate your concerns as well as the kings but as you can see I'm alive and well" my lady made a curtsy. I could tell she was trying to hold the spite in her voice away from having to entertain visitors, unwanted visitors! No to mention that they are well aware of the bad blood the two family harbors, the king doesn't and yet even at that they couldn't resist the trill of beating the wounded. How shameless could they be?! even if it was a request from the king their little brother had died along with his family leaving only his littlest one behind, even if they were encompassed with greed they could have made a plea to let her be, that would be a kindness done too great even for them. The expressions each one displayed was an obvious sign that they were anything but concerned about her wellbeing, they came to break whatever was left of my lady.

"If I may be allowed to speak dear" the Viscount's wife spoke up

"Alive yes but I can't say that you look well at all" she was donning a purple-sliver dress and a silver hand fan to match and it was this hand fan she used to cover her mouth whilst she said those words elegantly hiding the venom in her tone

"That in itself is not your problem, although my father's will stated I inherited his property at twenty, I am an adult, finished my debut and have lived maturely and rightly as a citizen of the kingdom so I do not need a sitter much less from you lot" that's it my lady, you are the duke's daughter after all you should never cower to the likes of them, my lady spoke with her chin raised confidently

Annoyance flashed across their faces, the viscount and his son didn't bother to hide theirs but his wife masked hers with something akin to an understanding smile the woman was better than she let on no doubt high society had a hand in it.

"You might want to watch the next things you say carefully as we are only messengers to the king, he will take our words seriously!" the viscount snapped at my lady how outrageous!

"What part of I am an adult did you not get dear uncle? Whatever you say will be meaningless the moment I put on a dress and present myself in front of the king" she stared down at them as she remained at the top of the stairs

"Well even though you would love to rid yourself of us, you cannot at least for the night, the royal guards had escorted us here, except you would want rumors to spread about our family and ruin your father's pristine reputation he guided whilst he was alive you will do well to show us a room" the words that came out of viscount's mouth caused the skin on my lady's face to scrunch up

"You realize you have more to lose from that, don't you?"

"Indeed, indeed I do but I doubt the little duke would want to do anything that will harm her late father, even just a little" he had hit a nerve because my lady made a small sound of irritation before turning and walking away, she gave a servant the task of showing them a room at the annex away from the main building and then she was off but before she was out of hearing range she spoke

"By tomorrow I shall bid you farewell"

I went ahead to help the other servants as they helped take the luggage the viscount had brought, we were given several instructions by the viscountess and I was sent out of the manor to get a task done.
