Lacey
Dammit. I totally blew off some of the hottest guys at school. I said something stupid, like I always do. I thought angrily.

I pulled up to my mansion and turned off my car. I took a minute to recap what happened today at school. After I was sure that the memory of Carter and I's interaction was permanently engrained in my brain I got out of my car.

When I went inside I was surprised to find it quiet. There was no clacking of keyboards, no classical music playing, and no one yelling commands at me. For a split second I was worried, then I remembered my parents were out of town. I sighed with relief and threw my backpack on the couch in the living room.

When I got upstairs, I turned on my phone and started blasting my favorite musical, Wicked, throughout the house. I smiled and plopped down on my bed, so I was staring up at the ceiling. To relieve some of today's stress, I let my mind wander. Unfortunately for me, my mind wandered to the one person I didn't need to think of.

Carter Hall.

Dammit Carter, you are making my thinking very difficult.

I could almost hear her sultry laugh at my expense. I groaned and got up, trying to shake off the thoughts of Carter. It didn't work, to say the least. No matter how many other things I forced into my mind, the thought of Carter Hall stood out front and center.

I sighed in resignation and decided I should tackle the book list my Lit. teacher passed out today. So I rolled onto my side and sat up. I walked downstairs and dug out my binder from my backpack and sat myself at the bottom step of the stairs and pulled out my small stack of papers from today.

On the very top of the stack was my schedule. Carter's number was still on the top of the page, covered in little hearts and stars, courtesy of yours truly. Looking back now I think it describes how different we were at the time, how something so small could explain our personalities perfectly.

I was moving the paper away when the smell of cold smoke and rich smelling perfume hit my nose, mixing to make one of the most intoxicating yet strangely erotic smells I've ever encountered.

It was the always enticing scent of none other than Carter Hall.

Carter
"Carter! Get your lazy ass up!" my roommate, Delta, yelled from the bottom of the stairs.

I sighed in annoyance and threw off my covers. Wearing only panties and a Pink Floyd t-shirt I stomped down the steps and into the kitchen. I pulled open the fridge and stood there while my eyes roamed the shelves for beer. Once I found it I snatched it up and in one fluid motion, popped off the cap and took a deep drink.

"Finally. How was school today kiddo. I got home and you were passed out upstairs." Delta said, walking into the kitchen.

"Fine. Same old same old, except...we did get this newbie, her name is Lacey," I said, taking another sip of beer.

"Is she cute?" Delta asked. Going over to our sink and starting on last nights dishes.

"She's a posh princess from Upstate New York" I said dryly, opening up our worn, wooden cabinets for my stash of cookies.

"And?"

"And I'm a trigger happy metal head from Texas," I said with exaggerated patience.

"So you don't mesh." Delta said knowingly.

"Yup."

I didn't find Delta. Delta found me. I was sitting outside a bar, about to hit up some slum for some cash, when she approached me with promises of a real bed and a shower. Which was more than enough for me. So I agreed. Then she found Gina, who I call my sister, and the three of us became our own, weird little family.

"Where's Gina?"

"With her friends, she'll be home soon." I answered

"Isn't tonight movie night with your band?" Delta asks, changing the subject nonchalantly.

"Yeah. They're supposed to be over here in an hour," I said, referencing the clock.

"Can you guys fend for yourself tonight. I've got night-shift at the bar." She explained. Only then did I notice she was wearing her bar tending uniform. A black pair of heels, black skirt and a black shirt that said Jerry's Cowboy Roadhouse.

"Yeah." I nodded. I finished off my beer and tossed it in recycling.

Delta smiled and kissed my head before leaving them e house. The house was as quiet as it was when I got home and I sighed in relief. My relief was short lived when my sister made her arrival known.

"Yo Carter! I'm home!" Gina called walking into our house. Her dreads bounced against her back as she bounded into our front hallway.

"In the kitchen." I answered pulling open the fridge and tossing Gina a beer as soon as she walked into the room. She caught it with ease and winked at me.

"Ladies. Your savior has arrived," a new voice sounded from the front door, also known as Slater Fray.

"Slater. Buddy. Please tell me you have a pack of cigarettes for me," I respond digging through my purse on the kitchen counter for some cash.

"Always doll face." He winked and I handed him the cash, he passed me the pack and I put it in my purse.

"Did you see the newbie today Carter?" He asked, pocketing his cash.

"Lacey Summers? Yeah, we have math together." I answered taking a sip of beer, watching as Gina forked over cash for a pack of cigarettes as well.

"She's fresh from New York. I can smell it on her," Gina added, pulling her dreadlocks into a ponytail.

"Upstate New York," Slater corrected. He ran a hand across his face, in the process he managed to smudge his eyeliner.

"What are we talking about?" A new voice joined our conversation. I looked up suddenly and saw our friend Kyle digging through my fridge for food.

"The new girl," I answered.

"Lacey? She came up to me and the boys today after school. She asked where you were," he explained, settling on leftover pizza. "Devon likes her, he wants to get in her pants big time." he continued giving me a cautious look. A look that meant he was asking me for permission.

"She's so not my type." I laughed, knowing that she wouldn't last a day with me.

"So you wouldn't object to Devon sleeping with her?" Kyle asked.

"Go for it." I answered and grabbed another beer from my fridge.

The four of us settled in the living room. Kyle put in The Shining and went to the kitchen for some stronger liquor and popcorn. After he came back and distributed the food and shot glasses, I hit play and the movie started.

This was gonna be an awesome night.
