I could feel it getting darker, as I left the gym. I was a sweaty mess. I hated the thought of my clothes sticking to my clammy skin. I don't even know why I put myself through this every time. It seemed like a good idea to exercise but I deeply regretted it now. I swung my sports bag over my shoulder and picked up my speed. I already felt the first drops of rain fall from the sky.
Whilst I was crossing the road, I felt my phone vibrating behind me. I cursed whoever called me and rummaged through my sweaty gym clothes.
I held my phone to my ear, trying to understand something despite the blaring traffic around me.
"What do you want?"
I heard a cackle from the other side.
"Gee, who pissed in your cornflakes?" Raven remarked.
I rolled my eyes, forgetting that she couldn't see it.
"Nobody," I muttered.
I could practically see her grinning from where she was. I walked through an alleyway and tried to avoid the litter, strewn around the ground.
"No, but seriously," I demanded. "What do you need?"
I knew Raven for long enough to know that she never called unless she had a favour to ask from me.
She sighed into the phone.
"My friend bailed on me," she groaned. "I need a chaperone."
I thought about it for a second.
"She's not really a good friend if she bailed on you."
"I know," she paused. "But she isn't much of a party person."
I bit my lip. Even though I always liked a good party, my energy was pretty much at its lowest right now.
"I don't know Raven..." I trailed off. "There are always other parties we could go to. I think Matthew said something about a birthday party next week."
Raven huffed.
"Come on! I'll never ask for anything again if you come. I promise."
I knew that wasn't true. She never kept any of her promises.
"Alright. Fine. But just this once."
Liar said a voice in the back of my head as I walked up the stairs leading to my front porch. It was going to be one hell of a night.
