What exactly does he have planned for me in here? A small part of me hopes he'll pin me against the wall and kiss me until neither of us can breathe.
"I'm starting to think you don't like to listen." Kade lets out a frustrated breath. "I told you to do something, and you do it. I don't like to repeat myself." He moves to his desk, sits, and starts typing something on his laptop. Slowly, I approach the desk but angle myself just enough to see the screen as I rummage my hand through the lollipop dish. He is searching through his emails for whatever—
"May I help you?" He clears his throat.
"Just want to know whatcha doing? Need help with hacking something, perhaps? It will cost you, though." I toss the cherry lollipop in my mouth in the trash once I spot the Watermelon flavor in the dish.
Kade pauses, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. He looks up at me. "And what will it cost?"
I shrug, unwrapping the lollipop.
"Your undying attention for the next three hours, and maybe a dinner," I reply, popping the Watermelon lollipop into my mouth.
"Is that all? You're selling yourself short."
"What I really want, you might be opposed to."
Kade smirks, leaning back in his chair with a mock serious regard. "Try me," he challenges.
"I hear the third time is always a charm." I twirl the lollipop stick between my fingers, watching his reaction closely.
"I'm not fucking you again. Aren't women supposed to have a little more respect for themselves? Throwing yourself at me is an actual fucking turn-off, you know?" He retorts.
His words slap me in the face. My chest tightens, and I force a smile on my face, nodding. I don't know why I have this overwhelming sense to cry. "You're right, Kade. Absolutely right," I say, working hard to keep my voice steady and light, even though there's a storm brewing inside me. Walking away from the desk, I take a deep breath, focusing on the sugary taste of the watermelon lollipop in my mouth. Gotta keep it cool, I remind myself.
I move to the large window that overlooks the bustling city below, trying to distract myself with the view. Kade's office is ridiculously high up, like an eagle's nest. Maybe he likes watching over his empire as much as he likes bossing around people like me.
"Anyway," I start again, turning back to face him. "When are you taking me home?"
"Did I hurt your feelings?" Kade smirks, as if he likes the idea that he has.
He's like a cat that got the cream, and I'm just the mouse in his paws. I arch an eyebrow and lean against the windowpane, fiddling with the lollipop stick. "Nope," I pop the 'p' with a fake brightness. "I realized that fucking you again was a bad idea. You can take me home or Yannick. I not opposed to being alone with him."
