Waking up Falen seemed rather difficult with the fading light.
"Ughh... NOOOOOOO." Falen groaned, opening their mouth to let out a massive yawn. "I fell asleep?"
"And I bet you're going to do it again when we get back." Koji chuckled.
"Depends if the sugar still makes up half of what they ate today." Ren raised her eyebrow. "Oh wait- it definitely still is."
"Wait!" Hazel exclaimed. "We're going to miss dinner!"
"WHAT?!?!" Falen yelled, throwing themselves up onto their feet. "Come on, let's go, go, go!" They begged, grabbing Hazel and dragging her towards the exit to the courtyard.
"I'll finish my book when we get back." Ren huffed, snapping her book shut. "Then again... Maybe It's for the best that I don't finish it the same day I get it."
"HELPPP" Hazel screeched, Falen making her arms sore from pulling. "AHHHHHHHHHH-"
Hazel eyed Falen while rubbing her arm, the sound of their shoes on cobble filling the now quiet air. Most stalls had packed up for the night, and the forgotten golden streamers were now gently fluttering in the breeze from the small crevices and corners they got stuck on.
"Oh look!" Falen gasped, pointing towards the centre of SilverKeep, where the Circle of Kings dominated the sky. "The royal family must be releasing the lanterns!"
Falen was right. Small golden lights started to glimmer into the growing darkness, bobbing across the sky and up towards the mountains nearby. It was a tradition SilverKeep did every festival, calling for their gods to return to them.
It never did anything except create a pretty display for Hazel to watch from her window, yet now she stood watching it from so nearby, slowly her steps slowed down, her attention caught on the spectacle.
"Let's hurry up, we definitely missed dinner." Koji said, quickening her pace. "Now I'm just hoping Kelusis doesn't find out we're still out."
When they had finally cleared from the outer city, Hazel could barely see in front of her, the darkness had fully closed in and left the four practically blind. Hazel looked up towards the moon, which she noticed was shrouded in clouds.
"Hold my hand." Hazel said, grasping Falen's and Ren's hand, Koji then grabbed Ren's, finishing the little wall they created.
"We should be quiet, just in case." Ren whispered. "We have a few wolves near the mountains, so we don't want to alert any if they decide to head into these forests. They don't normally come down this low though, so we should be fine."
"I could totally fight one!" Falen shouted as quietly as they could, their eyes almost gleaming in the dark. "They should be the ones worried!"
"I don't think-" Koji whispered harshly, but fell short as she gave off a shrill scream as she suddenly slipped down.
Right down into a ditch.
They heard a thud as Koji screeched once again, leaves rustling as she landed.
"Are you ok???" Ren called down, her voice no longer hushed.
"Stupid, stupid ditch." Koji scowled.
"Ren, try to get a light spell up for us!" Falen seethed.
"I- I don't think-" Ren stuttered, whipping out her small journal and squinting at it.
"Just DO IT, please?" Falen pleaded, as Koji continued to curse at the ditch.
"Here!" Ren called. She grabbed onto the earth below and picked up a large handful of dirt. "Diemlux!"
The dirt instantly started glowing, wobbling in Ren's hand. Ren watched on with determination as it started to form a bright perfect sphere or light in her hand, almost rolling right off and into the ditch.
