Jason woke up to William pacing the room, muttering to himself. He was rushing around, trying to comb his hair and fumbling through his drawers. He hissed out a stream of curses and slammed his drawer shut and yanked another open. It was unsettling to see the cool and calm William act so flustered and angsty.

He sat up in the bed, wanting to ask if he was ok. The vampire noticed him move. He barely made a sign of acknowledgement and continued grumbling to himself. Jason tilted his head.

"You good there? You're fussing like a mother late for church."

The vampire snorted. "I just got a message that the monster is coming to inspect the manor. She wasn't supposed to come until next month." He rummaged through his drawers, messing up all the folded clothes.

"Monster?" Jason inquired.

William groaned. "Marianna."

Jason winced. He knew how much weight that name carried under this roof. She was the previous lady of the manor until William, and some other vampires ran her out for her tyrannical reign. Unfortunately, Marianna still had her following and took over a castle in Romania. The only reason William was allowed to still run the manor his way was because they made a contract. Marianna was allowed to drop by, to make sure they were making their quota. Whatever that was.

Most of the vampires that she had ruled over at the manor had all left. Except for William and the two older vampires, Cornelius and Elizabeth. Both from the eleventh century. They both became vampires in their thirties, appearing older than most of the others as well. For the most part, the two kept to themselves, living in their own wing of the manor, happily married to each other.

"I'm sure you'll do fine," Jason encouraged him.

William sighed. "She won't like that you and Lydia are living here as humans. Back when she ran the place, if she hadn't eaten her prey, she turned them into vampires and dragged them here."

Jason was grateful William was offering him time for the choice. Although kidnapping was still problematic, he couldn't help but feel grateful that they could have been worse.

"What made her choose between sucking them dry or turning them into a vampire?" The man felt bad for asking, but he wanted to know.

The vampire sighed, shoving a drawer shut. "If she found them attractive enough. We were nothing more than toys to her, and I was her favorite. Probably still am, which is why she hasn't tried to kill me yet."

Jason wasn't sure how to respond. Luckily, he didn't need to. William yelled another curse as he shoved the last drawer in. He was clearly having a hard time finding whatever it was he was looking for.

"What did you lose?" He asked.

"A stupid antique pocket watch. It has a secret compartment with garlic in it."

"Garlic?" Jason was shocked. Out of all the things he expected to be true about vampires, garlic was not what he was expecting.

"Yeah, it's kind of like a pepper spray for vampires. The smell burns," William explained.

Jason nodded. He scanned the room, and a familiar golden gleam entered his vision. He cleared his throat. "Will. It's on top of the dresser."

William paused before slowly looking down. The pocket watch was laying on top of the surface. He snatched it, shoving it into his pocket. The vampire grumbled to himself as he finished tucking his white button up into his gray slacks.
