Maya's POV

Riley had this gift to make things go away to make life brighter, even if only temporarily. Riley had offered me to spend the night,  truth was i never wanted to go back to that house, There were no happy memories there for me, but I knew I would eventually have to go back. However, tonight was not that night. "i would like that Riley," I replied, accepting her offer. as she left to inform her parents, I decided i should probably do the same. Taking out my phone, I struggled to come up with a message. Eventually, I settled on a simple " at Riley's. See you tomorrow."  at least now my mother wouldn't worry although I wasn't sure if she would. When Riley returned, I made myself comfortable on my side of the bay window, (the side where people usually entered.) Riley, on the other hand, chose to relax on the other half. Whenever we had a sleepover, she always insisted on not using her bed, claiming it was more fun that way.

I sat there wide awake, glancing over at Riley. I could see she was sleeping peacefully. Gazing out the window at the half-hidden stars, I guess that's one good thing about my place - you can see the stars better, with fewer city buildings. I don't know what to make of anything anymore. What could my father possibly have done to ruin his new chance? And what makes him think he can just come back and expect to be accepted with open arms? The fact that he was shocked that my mother moved on and got married baffles me. And if he loves me so much, why the heck did he say those things about me? The only reason I'm broken is because of him. I close my eyes, willing myself to sleep. After a few more minutes of waiting, I finally fell into an uneasy sleep.

I woke up with the sun glaring in my eyes. Who needs alarms when the sun rises at the right time? I sat up and looked at Riley, who was still sleeping. Without Riley, I don't think I would have survived, and even if I did, I wouldn't be the person I am today. She saved me from complete loneliness. I met her when I needed someone the most, and since then, she has been the main source of my happiness. Life without Riley is not a life at all. Slowly getting up, I poked Riley. Unlike me, she was a heavy sleeper. After a few more pokes to her side, she finally woke up. "Maya, let a girl sleep," she groaned, gesturing with a flimsy hand for me to go away.

"Come on, wake up," I said, trying to tug her off the bay window. "Oof! Maya, you didn't have to do that," Riley stated crossly from the floor. I just started laughing uncontrollably as I put my hand out for her to grab. She took it and pulled me down to join her. Now we were both on the floor, laughing our heads off. "Morning, peaches," Riley said, giving me a warm stare. "Morning," I replied as we got up. "Well, I guess we should get ready, right?" Riley asked. I nodded and headed into her closet. I found a small pile of my clothes that I kept at Riley's place. I mean, I was here all the time, so I had to be prepared.

At School

I was walking with Riley as we entered the school on our way to our first class when a group of girls in bright pastel colors approached us. "Hey, Riley! We were wondering if you'd like to sit with us at lunch today," the girl in the front, whom I recognized as Missy Bradford, asked, not even glancing at me.

"Oh, I'm sorry; I sit with Maya at lunch," Riley replied, putting an arm around me. missy glared at her i knew she did not like Riley to say the least "As a member of the cheer squad, it's mandatory that you sit at our table," glaring at me. I hated this girl; she got on my last nerve for so many reasons. "If Maya can't sit with you, then I don't think I can make it," Riley said simply, frowning at the cheerleaders. The group of girls looked at me and then at her, mumbling to one another. "We don't allow outsiders in, sorry," Missy replied after a moment. I could tell Riley was upset by this; I knew she wanted to sit with them but also wanted to stay with me. She opened her mouth to reply, but I got to it first.

"It's fine, Riley. Go sit with them; I'll be fine," I said, forcing a smile. I didn't want to be the reason she missed out on cheer practice. "Are you sure, Maya?" Riley asked, bewildered. "I'll be fine. Plus, I'll have Lucas, Farkle, and Smackle at the table. You go enjoy yourself," I assured her, keeping my voice steady. She gave me another concerned look, clearly looking for something, before turning to the girls. "Fine, I'll sit with you," she said, trying to keep her voice from squeaking in excitement. Missy nodded briefly before leading her group away.

Missy was the only cheerleader who hadn't supported Riley at tryouts and to add she was the captain; that was one reason to dislike her. The biggest reason was that she bullied Riley a bit ago It took everything in me not to knock her senseless. No one hurts Riley. Thank you, Maya. I appreciate it," Riley said softly as we entered class and took our seats. Mr. Matthews came in, and class began.
