“And in this world, you’re my only world........................”
The restaurant buzzed softly with the hum of casual conversation and clinking cutlery. There was a certain gentleness between Vatsal and Shubhita that had blossomed over time—a quiet, growing bond that made them more attuned to each other, more aware of the subtle shifts in each other’s mood. Tonight, it was Vatsal’s teasing that hung in the air, as constant as her attempts to keep it in check.
“Vatsal, stop it!” she whispered for the umpteenth time, her eyes darting around to see if anyone was watching.
He smirked, leaning close, the warmth of his breath tickling her ear. “I’m not doing anything,” he teased innocently, his fingers just brushing hers as they sat side by side.
She glared at him, though the warmth spreading across her cheeks gave her away. “You know exactly what you’re doing,” she muttered under her breath, trying to sound stern but failing as a smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
Her mind was torn between annoyance and the growing flutter inside her, an odd mix of warmth and nervousness that she couldn’t quite shake off whenever Vatsal played his games. It was strange how a man she had once only thought of as a companion now made her feel so much more—feelings she hadn’t expected to creep in so naturally.
Whilst eating, Ojas leaned forward with a grin. “Can’t resist whispering sweet nothings already, huh?”
Leher chuckled, her eyes glinting with playful mischief. “We’re starting to think you both have been hiding something from us.”
Shubhita’s cheeks flushed even deeper, and she waved her hands dismissively. “It’s nothing like that! He’s just… impossible.”
Ojas leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, a smirk tugging at his lips. “Impossible, huh? I think he’s very possible.”
The teasing tone in Ojas’ voice made Vatsal roll his eyes, but Shubhita couldn’t deny the strange flutter in her stomach. Her eyes met her husband for a brief moment, and for the first time, she felt something else behind those playful words—a distinctness that she hadn’t noticed before.
Leher, catching the subtle shift, laughed. “Look at her blush! Oh, Vatsal, I didn’t know you had this effect on her!”
Before Shubhita could respond, her gaze flickered down to Leher’s belly, barely noticeable but undeniably growing with the new life inside her. It was her second time seeing Leher since finding out about the pregnancy, and every time she saw her, it stirred something deep within her—a feeling she wasn’t sure how to process.
Leher was glowing, yes, but it was more than that. There was a calmness, a contentment in her that made Shubhita wonder… could she ever be like that? Could she ever imagine herself with the same soft, radiant glow of motherhood?
Her thoughts drifted unconsciously, and without realizing, her eyes landed on Vatsal. In that split second, she was overwhelmed by a sudden, unexpected image: Vatsal, holding their baby. Their child. Her heart skipped a beat, and a wave of nervousness washed over her. The idea was absurd, and yet… why had it come to her so naturally?
She quickly turned her gaze away, feeling embarrassed by the very thought. This was too much. They weren’t even at that stage yet. Heck, they were still figuring each other out. But the idea had planted itself firmly in her mind, and now, no matter how hard she tried to push it away, it lingered.
Leher’s voice snapped her back to reality. “You okay, Shubhita?”
She blinked, forcing a smile. “Yeah, yeah. Just thinking about how exciting it must be for you.”
