Finally, the sound of the door opening cut through the silence. A nurse stepped out.
"Mrs. Kim?" She called gently.
Mrs. Kim tensed at the sound of her name, her grip on Kai's hand tightening. She took a deep breath, as if bracing herself for the hardest thing she would ever have to do.
Slowly, Mrs. Kim stood up, her movements stiff. The nurse gave her a sympathetic smile and held the door, gesturing for her to go in.
Mina and Kai followed, their presence providing her with some comfort.
The room was small and bleak. An autopsy table sat in the middle, covered with a white cover. The room smelled of antiseptic and death.
They approached the table slowly. Mrs. Kim was trembling now, her breaths coming in shallow gasps. She seemed to be shrinking with every step closer to the table.
"Mrs. Kim, Before you see the body. Can you tell us if you recognize these thing ?," The officer said placing a plastic bag on the table.
"We found these on the body"
Inside the transparent bag, A white top, blue jeans, a sling bag, a golden chain and a mobile phone.
Mrs. Kim's knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed. Kai and Mina quickly reached out to support her, their eyes also fixed on the bag.
It was undoubtedly Anya's stuff. The room seemed to spin as all three of them stared at the things.
Mrs. Kim stared at the bag that held her daughter's belongings, her vision becoming a blur of tears. That white top, it was the same clothes Anya had worn when she left home. The clothes, the phone, the bag. All those things were hers.
As soon as Kai saw the dress he remembered that he was the one who told Anya to wear white and he could not stop the tears rolling down his eyes.
The weight of undeniable truth crashed down on them, crushing their heart into tiny pieces.
Mrs. Kim's mind was whirling, her thoughts a mess. She couldn't allow herself to believe. Not until she saw the body.
She took a step forward on shaky legs, her eyes fixed on the covered body on the table.
The officer gently held her arm, "Are you ready?" his voice soft and gentle.
Mrs. Kim felt like she was drowning in a sea of pain. She looked at Kai and Mina who were standing behind her, their faces etched with worry and grief.
She wanted to turn around and run away, to pretend this wasn't happening, but she knew she couldn't.
Her eyes met the officer's, and she gave a small nod.
A nod to face the worst nightmare of her life.
The officer nodded back, his expression understanding.
Slowly, he pulled the cover back, revealing the face of the person on the table.
Mrs Kim took a breath and looked down, her eyes locking with the closed eyes of the person on the table.
