The witch doctor withdrew her fingers from Arabella's wrist, pushing her dirty red locks behind her back. She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, unable to wrap her head around the idea that someone as heartless as King Devin could have a soul mate.
"What's wrong with her?" He asked, his voice low and commanding. The wretched man he was, she thought.
"She's in heat." She said simply, reading his expressions.
He mirrored her confusion, before realization dawned on him. He adopted a pensive look, licking his lips anxiously. "What does that mean? Is she in pain?"
"She will be. A she-wolf's body undergoes changes after being marked by her mate. These changes can be painful, if the body's needs are not being satisfied."
"Needs?" He asked again.
"She needs her mate. They will need to consummate their union." She looked back at the girl on the bed, she felt nothing but pity for her.
Nathaniel stared hard at Arabella, his longing for her conflicted with whatever shred of morality he still possessed. He dismissed the witch, who hurried along, glad to be anywhere but near him.

The Oval hushed as Nathaniel entered, whatever discussions dimmed as the vampires took their positions to greet their King, their God.
The handsome vampire walked confidently to the table, unbuttoning his blazer as he took his seat, motioning for the rest to do the same.
The general of the kingdom's army spoke first. "We have rounded up at least a dozen witches working with the werewolves and publicly executed them. During our raids we have found a couple of interesting things that might be able to help us. Firstly, this." He lifted up a small cylinder of viscous blue liquid. "This is what the humans drink before they get bit and turned, it helps them with the process, enhances the rate or survival. It was provided for by the witches. Explains how many they managed to turn, I must say they have gotten quite desperate to build a larger army."
Nathaniel nodded his head solemnly. "Make sure you destroy the rest of the potions. These humans that have been turned, they would still be young and untrained. They will not match up to the skill of our army. "
The rest nodded in agreement, taking their King's word for law and truth.
"The army they are building is in preparation for something bigger. There is no denying they are preparing for a full scaled war. We have to be prepared as well, we have to be better, stronger, faster." Nathaniel spoke slowly, looking into the eyes of the vampire men around the table.
"Remember, they are not immortal. We are." The grey pools in his eyes swirled, the way it did when he knew victory was his.

Arabella stirred in her sleep, a deep ache forming in her abdomen. Her chest was getting tight, each breath got harder to take in. She reached out for a familiar body, but there was nothing but empty sheets in front of her. She blinked her eyes open slowly, her throat felt dry and hoarse.
There was the same burning on her neck, where Nathaniel's bite mark rested. She remembered vaguely when her teacher at werewolf school taught their class sex ed. She remembered why this was happening to her. She groaned softly at the thought, she knew the pain she was in for.
She tried to get up, her body felt sore and weak. She placed both feet on the cold floor, trying to get her bearings.
"You should rest." A deep voice spoke. Nathaniel stood at the doorway, watching her every move but not coming closer to her.
