Nathaniel's POV
I watched her as she slept, her chest rising and falling, eyelids twitching every now and then, the way her hair framed her face so perfectly. Her lips were slightly ajar, and I had the greatest temptation to lean in and kiss her, but I did not want to wake her up.
We had lost track of time and it was already nightfall. I think about what had happened just hours earlier, and a smile creeps onto my face without me realising. She was incredible. I always found men and wolves foolish for allowing themselves to love and to be vulnerable to their emotions. But now, I understood it. I have had my fair share of time spent in bed with the most beautiful of vampires in the Kingdom, but nothing could ever come close to lovemaking with Arabella.
Bzzz, Bzzz. My thoughts were rudely interrupted by the vibration of my cellphone - a strange but ever so useful invention by man. It was Xavier. I stepped out of the tent quietly to answer the phone, my body immediately missing the warmth inside.
"You may speak."
"My King, there have been some developments." Xavier spoke hurriedly, never a good sign. "Six of our prisons have been overrun in the past few hours. Mass attacks by the werewolf army."
"Fuck," I muttered under my breath.
"We have lost all the captives in the six prisons. I'm sorry, Your Grace." Xavier continued. "It may not be safe to be outside the palace at the present."
"Understood. I will be back as soon as possible, arrange a council meeting for when I arrive." I instructed, ending the call.
I paced back and forth, cursing softly under my breath. Now is not a good time for a thousand angry werewolves to be on the loose, especially with the impending Blood Moon.
I got back into the tent, Arabella was still soundly asleep. I hated to wake her up, knowing she has not been well-rested for the past few weeks. But I had little choice, we had to get back to the palace before we were detected by any werewolves. Although they should be resting and saving their strength like I initially predicted, it seemed that they were only becoming more aggressive. These random and near-sighted only shows signs of poor planning, a prominent problem with the lack of an Alpha. But a rogue army can be dangerous too.
I gently caressed Ara's back, and she stirred, opening one eye to look at me. "Nathaniel," the way she said my name so huskily made me want to take her right there and then. I brushed the strands of hair away from her face, "Hey," I whispered softly. "We have to go. Something came up at the castle."
She frowned ever so slightly, "But I want to stay. I want to be here with you."
I sighed, "Me too. I'm sorry baby."
She smiled and got up slowly, "It's okay. Let's go then."
Ara continued sleeping in the car ride back, she seemed exhausted. I sent her right to my chambers to sleep while I heading to The Oval to meet the council.
It was already 2 in the morning, but vampires did not need sleep, it was only done to pass the time painlessly.
"Good morning gentlemen," I said as I stepped in.
As they had done a thousand times before, they got up from their seats, bowed slightly before returning at my nod of acknowledgment.
The situation was getting hotter by the minute. Werewolf troops had begun advancing on the Kingdom. We had to meet them outside of the city walls to prevent as many civilian casualties. As much as they held their heads high in self-righteousness, the werewolves were animals and would not hesitate to kill anything that came in their way. Even vampire children and women. I had seen it all before.
