I could feel my heart racing as I adjusted my costume in the mirror, knowing I'd be arriving with Iso at the Valorant Protocol's Halloween party.
Everyone was dressed as their favorite creatures and legends, but I couldn't help feeling a bit self-conscious.
We'd picked a matching theme—Iso as a dark reaper, with armor that looked intimidatingly authentic, and me as a shadowy wraith, ethereal and haunting.
We looked like something out of an ancient myth together.
Just as I was about to adjust my hood again, there was a knock on my door.
I opened it to see Iso leaning against the frame, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Hey, ready to go, Wraith?" he said, giving me a once-over that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Only if my Reaper's ready to keep up," I replied, trying to match his confidence.
As we walked down the halls to the main area, where the party was already in full swing, I felt Iso's hand slip into mine.
His touch was steady, reassuring, but there was a mischievous energy in it.
We could already hear the bass thumping, muffled voices laughing and shouting over each other.
The Protocol agents really went all-out for the night.
The main room was transformed into a spooky, chaotic world.
Neon lights cut through the dim room, flickering between shadows of fake cobwebs, carved pumpkins, and creepy decorations hanging from the ceiling.
Cypher had hacked into the lights to add random flashes, and Raze's voice was booming over the music as she DJ'd from behind a small setup in the corner.
As soon as she spotted us, she whooped.
"Oh-ho, look who finally showed up!" she yelled, pointing dramatically.
Heads turned, and a few whistles echoed through the room.
I suddenly felt all the eyes on us. "Maybe I should've worn something a little less... out there," I murmured, feeling the heat rise to my face.
But Iso just grinned, squeezing my hand. "You look perfect," he said, and I could feel the sincerity in his words.
Phoenix, dressed like a fire demon, swaggered up to us. "Hey, lovebirds, didn't think you'd actually commit to costumes! You look sick!" He offered Iso a fist bump, which he returned with a grin.
We wandered around the room, greeting everyone, taking in the ridiculous costumes.
Brimstone was dressed as a very convincing pirate, complete with a fake parrot on his shoulder.
Viper was wearing something that gave "witch" a whole new meaning, her cloak trailing behind her, poisonous green smoke curling from a hidden device in her sleeve.
"So," Iso said, leaning down to whisper in my ear, "are you up for some of the games?"
I raised an eyebrow. "What kind of games are we talking about?"
With a smirk, he pointed across the room.
There was a makeshift haunted maze set up, dark and filled with spooky props. "They say only the bravest come out the other side unscathed," he teased.
I wasn't about to back down. "Lead the way, Reaper."
Hand in hand, we entered the maze.
The laughter and chatter of the party quickly faded behind us, replaced by the unsettling silence of the dimly lit maze.
I could barely see a few feet in front of me, and every twist seemed to have something waiting to jump out.
We rounded a corner, and a mechanized skeleton lunged forward with a loud clatter.
I flinched, laughing a little too loudly.
"Having fun?" Iso asked, sounding way too composed.
He was enjoying this.
"Don't get too comfortable," I replied, a grin tugging at my lips. "You might get scared yourself."
The maze wound deeper, the shadows playing tricks on our vision.
Suddenly, something moved ahead—a dark shape darting across our path.
I felt Iso's grip on my hand tighten, his calm demeanor finally cracking a bit.
"That... wasn't part of the setup, right?" I whispered.
He shook his head slowly, a playful glint in his eye. "Guess we'll find out."
We crept forward, each step echoing in the eerie quiet, and then... it happened.
Out of nowhere, a figure lunged toward us. I yelped, stumbling back, and Iso instinctively moved in front of me, a glint of his protective side showing through.
But then the figure straightened up, lifting its mask.
"Y'all are way too easy to scare!" Phoenix's laughter was deafening in the close quarters.
"Phoenix!" I swatted him, half-relieved, half-annoyed.
Iso just shook his head, though I could see the hint of a grin.
As we made it out of the maze, the rest of the night blurred by in laughter and surprises.
Games, snacks, and a dance floor had taken over, and soon, we found ourselves swaying together to a slower song that somehow managed to sneak into Raze's playlist.
Iso pulled me close, his arms steady around me, his eyes catching the faint glow of the Halloween lights. "So... not a bad night, right?" he murmured, his voice low, just for me.
"Definitely a night to remember," I replied, feeling that warm flutter in my chest as I leaned my head on his shoulder.
