MAX DENNISON woke up twenty minutes late on his first day of jacob bailey high school. he stumbled out of bed at seven a.m. and pulled on whatever clothes he could find that weren't still packed in boxes.
bowie campbell, woke up at six a.m.. she was frantic, thirty minutes behind schedule, rushing around her room trying to get dressed while eating a bagel and blow drying her hair. she would have to finish her makeup on the bus.
both of the teens arrived at school on time, max's dad dropped him off and bowie got the bus with her older sister. the girl had no idea who the new kid was, only that almost all of her friends said he was cute.
max saw bowie when they stood in opposite lunch lines. she glanced up and smiled at him, after her friend pointed out he had been staring.
"hey, who is that?" he asked a guy in his math class. "who?" he looked around clueless. "oh, her. that's bowie, she's in our history class. real nice girl. she was gonna throw a halloween party but changed her mind last minute."
"she's pretty," max said. "you've got no chance dude. she hasn't dated anyone since middle school," max raised his eyebrows at this in disbelief. "no way," he shook his head.
"seriously, she's too focused on other stuff. at least that's what everyone says." the boy led max across the cafeteria, to a table next to where bowie sat, laughing at a joke allison told.
"well, maybe she just doesn't like anyone here," he suggested. "maybe she'll like me." he smirked and his new friend laughed. "yeah, okay max."
"bow, the new kid keeps looking at youu..." connie whispered to her again. the blonde's eyes scanned the table he sat at, until they found him. he didn't look away when they made eye contact, he smiled brightly and bowie giggled. she raised her hand a slightly and waved a little.
her friends erupted in laughter and she blushed deeply, her head falling into her hands. "aw, little bowie's got a crush!" allison teased.
"stop! i do not! i don't even know his name," she sighed. "hey adam!" connie called over to her friend beside the new kid. "what's the new kid's name?"
bowie groaned and sank in her chair in embarrassment. could connie not have just asked the new kid himself? adam and the new kid smiled brightly and adam yelled back. "max dennison! why? did bowie wanna know?"
bowie flushed a deep shade of pink and connie nodded at adam, grinning. connie thought herself quite the matchmaker, but she couldn't work up the courage to ask out someone herself.
bowie ate her lunch in silence, nodding along as allison told her about her parents halloween party. "what are you guys dressing up as again?" julia asked the two. "well, my parents party is like, really old themed, so bowie's gonna be marie antoinette and i'm just gonna wear a big dress."
"yeah," bowie agreed. "it's like, 17th, 18th century kinda." julia smiled, "that's so cool! it sucks you both couldn't come to mine though, my older brother got us drinks and everything!"
"aw i knoww," the girls smiled sadly. the past year or so, julia had thrown a party for most major events, christmas, end of school term, birthdays, end of summer. every time they woke up hung over and allison almost always threw up.
but it was fun, it was what they did. apart from their little parties, their group was golden. teachers adored them and so did everyone's parents.
"hey, there's always christmas," allison smiled. "i can get out of my mom's christmas party, even my dad finds them boring."

the next day, max had started sitting with bowie and her group at lunch, bringing a couple of his new friends with him. wednesday he did the same and thursday, he ended up in the chair beside her.
she stared at allison in shock and a smile crept onto her face. "hi," "hey," they said at the same time. "i'm bowie," she held out her hand. handshake? really? she thought, no one shakes hands anymore!
she grounded internally but max chuckled and shook her hand, the metal of her rings felt warm in his own. "i'm max dennison." the blonde nodded, "yeah, i know. though, most people just call you 'new kid'." she cringed at herself again, she felt more awkward than usual.
max however, found it cute. he liked that she shook his hand, he'd been waiting for any excuse just to be near her and he practically got to hold her hand! "so, bowie? like david bowie?" he asked, hesitantly letting go of her hand.
"yeah.." she blushed. "my parents loved him. i've got a brother called lennon and a sister called marley too," she told him. he smiled at her, "big music fans huh?"
"yeah, definitely. i'm surprised they haven't tried changing our last name to mccartney or presley or something like that." she looked up from her lunch on the table, deciding to try be less awkward.
since she dumped her middle school boyfriend, she hadn't been out with anyone else. most guys thought she wasn't interested, but she was just a bit shy.
"i like your shirt," she said. "thanks, you like nirvana?" he questioned. "i love nirvana! have you listened to in utero yet? i swear it's like my all time favourite album!" she began to ramble a little.
"yeah, my dad got me the vinyl like the day after it came out and i had it on loop for days!" he grinned, glad they had a common ground, something to talk about. "it's so good," she agreed. "i think my favourite song on it is definitely either heart-shaped box or dumb."
max stared at the girl in awe, she was perfect for him. it was like they were made for each other. "totally! i loved serve the servants too, i learnt it on my drums."
bowie's jaw slacked a little. "no fucking way! you play the drums? that's awesome!" she loved guys that played the drums, she thought it was much hotter than guitar players. in fact, her room was covered in posters if dave grohl.
"really?" score! he thought. "you'll have to come to my place sometime, i could teach you." bowie giggled, "yeah maybe." she glanced at the watch on her wrist, and frowned. "i'm really sorry, but i have a dentist appointment in like twenty minutes, i've gotta go meet my mom at the front office."
she smiled sadly and said her goodbyes before rushing from the cafeteria. "awful timing," she mumbled as she left. max watched in awe as she walked away, pretending that he totally wasn't stairing at her ass.
"does she actually have a dentist appointment?" he asked allison. "or was i misreading our conversation?" ally laughed and nodded, "she's got an appointment, don't worry."

"that was smooth earlier," adam told the california boy as they walked to their last class of the day. max looked at him quizzically. "inviting her to your place, we were all listening, allison and julia have been talking non stop about trying to get you two together."
max smirked, "well, with any luck, they won't have to talk about it much longer."
