The first day of a new semester at Enha High School was always buzzing with excitement. Sunoo and Jake, best friends and serial gossipers, were eagerly awaiting the new transfer student who was supposed to join their class. They didn’t know much, except his name—Jungwon—and the rumors that he was a bit on the quiet side.
When Jungwon finally walked into class, his soft smile and shy eyes instantly caught Sunoo’s attention. Sunoo nudged Jake, nodding toward him. “Look, he’s adorable! We have to befriend him.”
Jake grinned. “Agreed. He looks like he’d fit right into our group. Plus, Jay’s been talking about wanting someone new to shake things up, right?”
They managed to pull Jungwon into their circle by lunch, introducing him to all their inside jokes and making him laugh in no time. By the time lunch was halfway over, Jungwon already felt like he’d known them forever.
That’s when Jay walked in, late as usual, but he froze the moment his eyes landed on Jungwon. Jay had always been the cool, confident type, never flustered by anyone, but something about Jungwon made his heart race. His smile was warm, and his eyes held a quiet confidence that had Jay hooked instantly.
Sunoo noticed the way Jay’s eyes lingered on Jungwon, and a mischievous smile crept onto his face. “Jay, this is Jungwon,” Sunoo said, holding back a laugh. “He’s new, and he’s sitting with us now.”
Jay tried to play it cool, but his voice came out a little too enthusiastic. “Welcome, Jungwon! Nice to meet you. Need any help getting settled?”
Jungwon smiled, tilting his head. “Thank you, but I think I’ll be fine. Sunoo and Jake have been very helpful.”
Jay took a seat across from Jungwon, barely hiding his smile. He hadn’t felt this kind of excitement in a while, and he decided he wasn’t going to waste any time.
Over the next few days, Jay made every excuse to be around Jungwon. He walked with him to class, joined him for study sessions, and even tried to get him to join the soccer team, just so they’d have more time together. Jake and Sunoo were onto him from the beginning, but they didn’t mind—they found the whole thing amusing.
Finally, one afternoon after school, Jay decided it was time to make his move. He caught Jungwon as he was putting away his books in his locker.
“Hey, Jungwon?” Jay started, scratching the back of his neck.
Jungwon looked up, an amused glint in his eyes. “Yes?”
“Uh, I was wondering if you’d like to go out sometime?” Jay asked, trying to sound casual. “Like, maybe…this Friday?”
Jungwon raised an eyebrow, a small smile playing on his lips. “Is this you asking me out?”
Jay chuckled, caught off guard by Jungwon’s straightforwardness. “Maybe. Is that a problem?”
Jungwon shrugged, his expression unreadable. “I don’t know… I’m not sure if I’d say yes so easily. You’ll have to try a little harder.”
Jay blinked, surprised. He’d never been rejected—well, not exactly rejected, but not exactly accepted either. It was new territory, and he found himself even more intrigued.
“Challenge accepted,” he said, grinning. “I’ll win you over, don’t worry.”
The next few days were filled with Jay’s attempts to catch Jungwon’s attention. He brought him coffee in the mornings, offered to help him with assignments, and even went as far as baking cookies one evening (with a lot of help from Jake) just to surprise him. But Jungwon always accepted these gestures with a polite smile, never giving him more than that.
By the end of the week, Jay was exasperated but undeterred. “I don’t get it,” he muttered to Sunoo and Jake at lunch. “I’ve tried everything, and he’s still playing hard to get.”
Jake laughed, patting him on the back. “Maybe that’s his way of telling you to keep trying. I mean, he hasn’t said no, right?”
Sunoo nodded, smirking. “Besides, I think he likes you too. He just wants to see how far you’ll go.”
Encouraged, Jay decided he’d try one more thing. He found Jungwon after class that day, a determined look on his face.
“Jungwon, I know you’re making this hard on purpose,” Jay said, smiling despite himself. “But I’m serious about wanting to go out with you. Just give me one chance.”
Jungwon paused, looking at him with a twinkle in his eyes. For a moment, Jay wondered if he was about to be brushed off again, but then Jungwon broke into a soft smile.
“Alright, Jay,” he said, his voice gentle. “I’ll go out with you. Friday night.”
Jay’s face lit up. “Really?”
Jungwon chuckled, nodding. “Yes, really. You’ve earned it.”
That Friday, Jay showed up at Jungwon’s door with flowers, his heart racing as he realized this was finally happening. They spent the evening at a cozy little café, talking and laughing, with Jay hanging onto every word Jungwon said.
By the end of the night, as they walked back together under the stars, Jay realized that all the effort had been worth it. Jungwon was more than just the new transfer student—he was kind, smart, and full of surprises. And as Jungwon reached out to take Jay’s hand, giving him a shy smile, Jay knew that this was only the beginning of something special.
