The early morning sun had not yet risen when Meera stirred awake. A gentle glow filtered through the curtains, but the clock read 4 AM. She sat up, excitement bubbling within her. Today was Karva Chauth, a special day for married women to fast for the long life of their husbands.
In the kitchen, Neeta was already bustling about, preparing the traditional sargi, a meal eaten before dawn. The aroma of sweetened vermicelli and spicy potatoes filled the air as Meera joined her.
“Good morning, beta!” Neeta said cheerfully, placing a bowl of vermicelli in front of Meera. “Eat up; it will keep you energized throughout the day.”
“Good morning, Ma! This looks amazing,” Meera replied, her eyes sparkling. She took a bite of the warm vermicelli and savored the sweet, rich flavors. “You always know how to make it perfect.”
Neeta smiled, her heart swelling with pride. “This is just the beginning. After this, we have so many rituals to follow. It’s a beautiful day.”
As they finished their meal, Neeta handed Meera a small plate filled with traditional items: a pair of bangles, some sweets, and a little pot of water. “These are for your prayers later. Make sure to offer them to the moon when you see it tonight.”
Meera nodded, her heart filled with anticipation. “I will, Ma. Thank you for teaching me everything.”
After finishing their meal, Meera cleaned up the kitchen while Neeta set up the living room for the evening's festivities. The home was adorned with colorful decorations, strings of marigold flowers, and twinkling lights, creating a festive atmosphere.
Later in the afternoon, it was time for Meera to apply mehendi. “This is my first Karva Chauth, and I want my mehendi to be special,” she declared, excitement evident in her voice.
“Let’s make it beautiful,” Neeta replied, pulling out intricate designs from a box. “Aarav will love it!”
Sitting in the living room, Meera carefully traced the henna onto her palms and feet, while Neeta shared stories of her own Karva Chauth experiences.
“I remember my first Karva Chauth. I was so nervous! But when I saw your father’s face light up with love, it made everything worth it,” Neeta reminisced with a soft smile.
Meera laughed, enjoying the intimate moment. “I hope Aarav will react the same way.”
“I’m sure he will, dear,” Neeta assured her, gently caressing her shoulder. “You two have a special bond.”
As the sun began to set, Meera hurried to get ready. She slipped into a beautiful red saree, adorned with delicate golden embroidery. Standing in front of the mirror, she admired her reflection. The colors complemented her glowing skin, and she felt a wave of confidence wash over her.
Just then, Aarav walked into the room, his eyes widening at the sight of her. “Wow! You look stunning, Meera,” he said, his voice filled with awe.
“Thank you! I’m still not used to wearing sarees, but I hope I did okay,” she replied, a shy smile creeping onto her face.
“You look more than okay. You look breathtaking,” Aarav said, stepping closer. “I’m so lucky to have you.”
Meera felt her cheeks flush as he leaned in to plant a soft kiss on her forehead. “I’m lucky too,” she whispered, her heart racing.
“Are you ready for the evening rituals?” he asked, stepping back to admire her once more.
“Yes! I can’t wait to see the moon,” she replied, feeling giddy.
As the evening progressed, they gathered in the living room, where Neeta had set up a small altar with a beautiful diya (lamp) and offerings. The room was filled with the soft glow of lights and the scent of incense.
“Alright, everyone! It’s time to pray,” Neeta announced, her eyes shining with excitement.
As they joined hands in prayer, Meera felt a profound sense of belonging. The warmth of her family enveloped her, making her heart swell with love.
Once they finished praying, Neeta pulled Meera close. “Now, you must wait for the moon to appear. And remember, the moment you see it, offer water to Aarav, and break your fast together.”
“I will, Ma,” Meera promised, her heart fluttering in anticipation.
Finally, as the moon emerged from behind the clouds, casting a silvery light across the room, Meera gasped in awe. “There it is!” she exclaimed, pointing excitedly.
Neeta handed her the plate with the offerings. “Go ahead, beta. It’s your moment.”
Meera stepped forward, her heart pounding. She offered water to Aarav, who smiled back at her, his eyes filled with admiration. “Thank you for fasting for me, Meera. I love you,” he said softly.
“I love you too, Aarav. You mean the world to me,” she replied, feeling emotional.
As they broke the fast together, sharing the sweet treats and sipping the water, Meera felt an overwhelming joy. It was a moment of intimacy and connection, solidifying their bond further.
Later, they gathered for dinner, laughter echoing throughout the home as they shared stories and enjoyed the delicious food Neeta had prepared. Aarav looked at Meera with pride, and she couldn’t help but feel the love radiating from him.
“This is the best Karva Chauth I could have ever imagined,” Meera said, her heart brimming with happiness.
“And it’s only going to get better from here,” Aarav replied, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
As the night drew to a close, Meera found herself feeling grateful for the traditions that brought them together. This Karva Chauth was more than just a ritual; it was a celebration of love, family, and the beautiful journey they were embarking on together.
Snuggled up next to Aarav on the couch, with her head resting on his shoulder, Meera smiled as she reflected on how far they had come. “I’m so glad to be celebrating this with you,” she whispered.
“Me too, Meera. Here’s to many more Karva Chauths together,” Aarav replied, wrapping his arms around her, as they both savored the sweet warmth of the moment.
